Volkswagen-backed Chinese battery maker Gotion High-Tech’s new LFP chemistry EV-battery ‘G-Current’ can deliver a ~500-km-range after only a 10-min charge. G-Current will bring stiff competition to fellow Chinese battery maker CATL’s ShenXing LFP battery unveiled last year. The ShenXing battery system offers a range of 400 km after a single 10-minute charge. CATL is the world’s largest EV-battery manufacturer with a >35% market share. Gotion, on the other hand, is the fourth-largest EV-battery maker in mainland China, and the eighth-largest globally. China is a big consumer and exporter of LFP batteries. More than 90% of LFP materials and components come from China. Researchers at Yokohama National University have unveiled a promising alternative to traditional nickel and cobalt-based batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Their innovative approach uses manganese in the anode, resulting in a high-energy density battery that is both cost-effective and sustainable. Traditional nickel and cobalt batteries, although preferred for their high energy density, are expensive and scarce. In contrast, the new manganese-based battery achieves an impressive energy density of 820 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh kg-1), surpassing the 750 Wh kg-1 of nickel-based batteries and significantly higher than the 500 Wh kg-1 of lithium-based batteries. The breakthrough involves using a monoclinic layered domain in LiMnO2, facilitating a crucial phase transition that enhances performance. The research team, led by Naoaki Yabuuchi, aims to address manganese dissolution and improve long-term stability.
