As fresh graduates, we've all been there - that feeling of uncertainty that comes with the question "What next?" It's completely normal to have such thoughts, but it's important to remember that it's just a step forward to something big. The real question is, what have you done to make your after-school life work or at least have a foothold on something? Personally, I believe that getting as much experience as you can while in school is key. Take advantage of the freedom you have in school and make the most of it. When that question pops up, at least you have a base, and what's needed is more effort, more push, and more discipline. So, what effort have you been putting while in school? What skills have you learned while in school? It's important to ask yourself these questions and take action towards self-development. Let's make that "What next?" question an exciting opportunity rather than a daunting one. #selfdevelopment

Note to Fresh Graduates Completing your undergraduate degree has to be one of the few things that evokes extreme euphoria and a sense of accomplishment. But when these feelings fade off, reality seems to be far from what the expectations were. For most, the phase is filled with lots of trepidation alongside anxiety due to the uncertainty of it. Like most people, I've also been there. Hence, I'll be sharing some tips given to me by my mentors which have really served as an accurate compass in navigating the time: - Celebrate: Completing your undergraduate studies after 4-6 years (depending on your course of study) is certainly a cause for celebration and you should celebrate. Reminisce on the journey, the accomplishments made amidst all of the struggles and relish in the fact that you made it through all of it to this moment. Buy yourself a treat, go on a trip, indulge in that hobby because you certainly have earned it. - Rest: Undergraduate studies is truly tasking and can be draining, hence some rest is recommended after completion. Just like you take a break and relax the body after a herculean task, you should do the same after completing your studies. Certainly, your life journey has not ended but this is just one of those many pit stops in the race where you stop to recharge before continuing on to the next lap. - Self Improvement: This phase is one of the best to improve your self. Conduct an honest self assessment and introspection to identify where you are headed, what you need to do to get there, the skills you require (technical and soft skills). When you've done this, proceed to act on your findings. It is popularly said that knowledge is power, however "Knowledge is only power when acted upon" - Napoleon Hill. Take an online course on that area you want to skill up (Coursera, Udemy and Alison are a great place to start). Another major way to self improve is through reading. Reading several resources including books, journals, blogs, and fiction, is a great way to improve your communication skills. - Prepare for the next stage: In line with wherever your interests may lie; Post-Graduate Scholarships, Graduate Trainee Roles, Entrepreneurship, and begin to prepare. Research your Industry of interest and find out what is required to get in at entry level. Practice Test Questions, practice for Interviews (mock interviews) to get acquainted and of course keep networking. PS: In all of these, ensure to keep perspective while identifying the peculiarity of your own situation and deal with it accordingly. Please feel free to share any other tips that I might have left out. Thanks for reading!

As part of my Graduate Assistantship role, I work with Freshmen in college every year. It can be fascinating but also challenging. These are some things I have learned in 2 years. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: The prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and impulse control, is said to fully develop at age 25. Most Freshmen come in at an average age of 18 with a new freedom, a thirst for life and everything it has to offer. They will make very silly mistakes like refusing to go to class because they do not like the professor or deciding to drop a class because they couldn't find the venue in the first week. Your job is to remind them of the tools and resources they have to navigate life in college. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬: As they discover who they are in this brand new journey, you can expect that they will change their minds about various things; their major, their decision to be in college, and everything in between. As you walk alongside them, you help them continue to answer the question of "why?" you encourage exploration and help them step outside their comfort zone. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: The job demands time, connections, and conversation. I often sit with my students to talk about life, love, and college. I maintain an open-door policy to build trust. Seeing how they improve their skills over time is always so rewarding. They learn to advocate for themselves, to discover what they might want and how to achieve their goals. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜: Sometimes, the job just entails listening and laughing with them. Other times, you will have to hold hands and walk to a counseling session literally. Still, other times, you will listen to a presentation demo and help them fine-tune their Comms speech. Whatever it is, the role involves flexibility, and it is essential to keep that in mind. If you were asked this question: “what should a fresh graduate do to advance their career and achieve professional success?”, what would your response be? Classical answers would be: ‘get a good degree’, ‘comit to continuous professional development’, ‘engage in research’, or simply ‘network’! All are valid answers, but perhaps what a fresh graduate (and we all) need at some stage is a simple act of #kindness: when a mentor or supervisor sees potential in you, and decide to recommend you to a colleague or offer you an opportunity that you wouldn’t have got otherwise. Like a #butterfly_effect, such a kind gesture can change the course of a person’s career, probably for the best, and they will remain eternally grateful for knowing that one person who believed in them. We need more of these kind mentors, so be one of them if you can! #mentors #mentorship #kindness #career

🌟 The Reality Check for Fresh Graduates 🌟 I've noticed a common challenge among young professionals (Freshies): 🔹 Expecting high salaries right away 🔹 Complaining about work 🔹 Job-hopping every 3 to 6 months The truth is, stepping into the 9-5 corporate world unveils a steep learning curve. Despite excelling in academia, there's so much that university doesn't prepare you for. 👩🏻💻👨🏻💻 Why is this important? Approaching your first job with a learning mindset is crucial. It's where you gain the skills, exposure, and experience that pave the way for a successful career. ❌ Without these, you risk missing out on valuable opportunities for growth and development. Let's shift the perspective: Transitioning from student to professional isn't just about applying what you've learned—it's about embracing continual learning and adapting to the demands of the workplace. Take charge of your career path. Content Credit: Mei Phing Lim #Professionallife #grwoth #learning #Setrightexpectations #Coorporatelife

A Fresh Graduate’s Journey into the Workforce 👨💼 Transitioning from university life to the working world is no easy feat. These past four months have been challenging, to say the least. From adapting to a fast-paced environment to learning to navigate new responsibilities, the learning curve has been steep. As a fresh graduate, I quickly realized that the theories and concepts I studied in university were just the foundation. Real-world applications come with their own set of complexities, requiring adaptability, problem-solving, and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. There were moments of doubt and growing pains, but every challenge has been a valuable lesson. I've learned to manage my time better, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and make decisions under pressure—all while discovering new skills and interests along the way. While it’s still tough at times, I’m hopeful that with time and continuous effort, I’ll get used to it and improve as a professional. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but I’m committed to becoming better every day. To all the fresh graduates out there: it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Embrace the journey and keep an open mind. Growth happens outside of your comfort zone, and every experience—good or bad—is shaping you into a stronger professional. Here’s to the lessons learned, the skills gained, and the resilience built. The journey is just beginning! 🚀 #FreshGraduate #LearningAndGrowing #WorkplaceJourney #CareerDevelopment

#Reflection_story Seven years down the line! Today I celebrate 7 years post graduation in teaching. A short inspirational story here! Must read for fresh graduates!🤗 On 17th May 2017, I completed my last paper in Kenyatta University, not sure or aware of what the world of hustle had in store for me. I wasn't sure of whatever I was doing, being a fresh graduate from college and also battling financial pressures after campus. One thing for sure kept me going, from the testimonies of colleagues I worked with as an untrained and later teacher trainee before undertaking my internship, I knew I was destined for greatness! The way colleagues believed in me, made me believe in myself more! As a fresh graduate, you need not to just fix yourself in a place for the sake of money, you have to do a background check to ensure that you don't compromise with professional growth at that early stage! I decided to volunteer in a big school with no income, yet I had many other options. I knew I was about to take a path less travelled! The journey to graduation month wasn't easy, thanks to colleagues for the unwavering support. 4/08/2017 was the day! From the same school I volunteered, I got a job. A two month volunteering was rewarded with a contractual job. Long story short, I ended up in a relatively big school. To fresh graduates: ✅ The dept of skills and experience is directly influenced by the status/level of the school or organisation, choose wisely! ✅ Believe in yourself even when no one seems to! ✅ Don't focus on making money, building skills and experiences should be your priority! ✅ Be open and have a positive attitude. ✅ Never allow anyone to destroy your self esteem. Yes, be teachable, but be an analytic! Tag along with seniors, listen more but remain true to your ambitions! #Hope #Amazing_grace #The_Journey #ESL #TEACHERSOFLINKEDIN #teacherlife #IGCSE #GCE #ESL
