Devastating floods have hit Maiduguri, Nigeria, after the collapse of the Alau Dam, leaving thousands homeless and struggling to survive. The disaster has affected over a million people, with many more at risk of disease and hunger as the city's sewer network has been badly damaged. The situation is dire, with families sharing what little food they have and children going hungry. As record-breaking floods sweep across West Africa, #Mali is experiencing its worst flooding since the 1960s. Over 300,000 people have been affected, more than 70,000 have been displaced, and at least 50 have been reported dead. The Government of Mali  declared a national emergency.  Over 1.6 million hectares of land, including more than a third of it cultivated land, have been reported as flooded. Malians have already been facing unprecedented levels of hunger; the impact of the flooding will only exacerbate food insecurity and hunger. In the capital Bamako, it's women - either widows or women with children - who are most affected; they earn their income from small businesses that have been destroyed and often live in makeshift shacks that wouldn't have withstood the floods.   The International Rescue Committee and the local NGO OPEN Mali are active members of the national flood preparedness and response mechanism for multi-sectoral aid for affected families. We're preparing our response with cash support to target those most impacted, while respecting the dignity of the households hit by the floods by allowing them to choose their priority needs – they are the ones who know what the real needs are. BORNO STATE, NIGERIA: FLASH FLOODS IN MAIDUGURI and JERE - UPDATE 1 HIGHLIGHTS - Overnight flash floods in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere local government areas (LGAs) have affected over 239,000 people. - An unconfirmed number of people have reportedly died or been injured. - Access to hospitals, schools and markets has been hampered. - Damage to infrastructure, including bridges, has been recorded. - Evacuation of people in high-risk areas to safer ground is ongoing. - Joint Government and UN/partners needs assessments are ongoing. - Priority needs are shelter, clean water and food (wet feeding). - Interventions to prevent disease outbreaks in camps and other evacuation sites are also required. - The Borno State Government (BSG) has appealed for humanitarian support. - The flooding is happening at the height of a food and nutrition crisis.  #ochanigeria #flashappeal #disasterresponse #responsecoordination

🌧️ Severe flooding continues to disrupt lives across South Sudan, impacting over 1 million people in 42 counties and the Abyei Administrative Area, with Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Unity states accounting for more than 40% of those affected. The humanitarian response is being further challenged by restricted access, as 15 essential supply routes are now impassable due to heavy rains and widespread flooding. This loss of access hampers our ability to deliver critical aid to displaced populations, including the 271,000 individuals who have been forced to seek refuge on higher ground. The recent flash floods in Bangladesh, the worst in three decades, have left a devastating impact across eight districts in the eastern and southern regions. Over 3 million people are affected, with thousands displaced and seeking refuge in communal shelters. The relentless monsoon rains, compounded by upstream water surges, have wreaked havoc on homes, farmlands, and infrastructure, cutting off electricity, and disrupting communication and transportation. This unprecedented disaster underscores the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts. The Bangladesh government, BRAC, and international organizations are on the ground, providing emergency aid, food, and shelter, but the challenges are immense. What we should be fighting against. The impact of flood risk is very critical and cannot be overlooked. I will always maintain that our current infrastructure development should be critically designed with more allowable capacity. Countries need to improve their drainage system to meet the unforseen rainfall circumstances. #Climate change is a global challenge and therefore it's effect will be felt by all. Perhaps only countries with improve systems may have some level of resilience.
