Researchers at TU Wien have developed a new hybrid catalyst by engineering zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with dual organic ligands, significantly enhancing their performance for (photo)electrocatalytic water splitting. This breakthrough, published in *Nature Communications*, improves ZIF stability and conductivity, crucial for long-term oxygen production and hydrogen generation. By precisely combining ligands, the team achieved a uniform structure that strengthens bonds with cobalt, resulting in a protective cobalt oxyhydroxide layer during reactions and preventing framework degradation. The enhanced material demonstrates 10 times higher conductivity and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rates. This innovation has promising applications in clean energy technologies, including catalysis and solar energy conversion, while setting a foundation for advancements in other metal-organic frameworks. 📚Thrilled to share our new article, “CO2 Hydrogenation Using Size-dependent Ru Particles Supported on g-C3N4,” now published in Carbon Catpure Science & Technology (CCST Journal). 🌍 Why This Matters: This study represents a significant stride in the field of sustainable energy solutions and catalysis. We explored how the size and loading of ruthenium (Ru) particles on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) impact the efficiency and selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation. 🔍 Key Findings: 👉Our catalyst with 1 wt% Ru loading demonstrated superior performance, converting CO2 with high efficiency and selectivity. 👉We achieved an enhanced CO2 conversion rate of 36.8% at 450 °C and an impressive CO selectivity of 83% at 375 °C. 👉Ru nanoclusters on g-C3N4 showed an excellent balance between activity and stability, outperforming both single-atom Ru and larger nanoparticles. 👉In-situ DRIFTS hints that the over-activation of CO2 may leads to deactivation of the catalyst. ✨ Highlights: We provided new insights into the role of Ru distribution (single-atom, nanocluster, and nanoparticles) in catalytic performance. The study underscores the potential of g-C3N4-supported Ru catalysts for efficient CO2 conversion into valuable chemicals, paving the way for innovative applications in the chemical industry. Chemists from the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (University of Amsterdam) (HIMS) are participating in the largest Dutch research project on green hydrogen production! 🎉 The NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) has announced the launch of this research project, named HyPRO. The urgency of the climate and energy transition is the driving force behind HyPRO. Green hydrogen is seen as a key solution for making heavy industry more sustainable and for storing renewable electricity generated by offshore wind. UvA researcher Amanda Garcia represents HIMS in HyPRO consortium: 'Not only do we bring our cutting-edge knowledge to the table, but we also provide an invaluable opportunity for our PhD students and postdocs to collaborate, learn, and innovate alongside some of the leading experts in the field. This will be key to driving forward the sustainable energy solutions of the future.' The HyPRO consortium includes 17 Dutch knowledge institutions and 41 companies, among them 17 Dutch startups.
