Comparison in PhD Comparison, being one of the major causes of mental health problems, is a severe challenge that scholars face in their PhD daily life. It can be done on multiple fronts and by different people including the scholar themselves. In my personal opinion, comparison is the worst thing you can do to yourself or let it be done by others. The reason is not because comparison is a bad thing, but what I have observed is the fact that it is mostly done on wrong dimensions. Let me give you some examples: 1. Publications: Scholars usually compare their research progress in terms of the number of publications and conference presentations. Though, it is relatively easy to publish in pure material science or chemistry than high-energy/theoretical physics or device development. Every PhD project has different set of aims and objectives which may take different amount of time. This time varies and the output can be seen after 1 year or 4 years, which can lead to 1 publication in 4 years to 10 publications in just 1 year. 2. Impact Factor: Comparison among scholars on the basis of impact factor is very common and the most irrelevant thing. In PhD, a person is regarded as the quality of work over the impact factor of the journal where their work is published. For instance, you can regard the fact that 2014 Nobel Prize of Physics was given to Shuji Nakamura, whose maximum work is published in low impact factor journals, but he did win the Nobel. Also, Its proven fact that journals publishing pure and fundamental research have lower impact factor than applied one's. 3. Working Hours: PhD is training of high quality research to be done in an efficient and effective manner and not the number of hours spent in laboratory. So, a person spending 18 hours in lab may not smarter or superior than others working 8-10 hours. Maintaining a work-life balance is equally important and required for your personal well-being. 4. Patents and Awards: Patents and Awards hold a significant merit in research, but equal weightage is also given to the fact that how many of the those awarded patents got commercialized. Besides, its also true that Patents in pure and fundamental research are rare. That doesn’t mean a person involved in pure or fundamental studies has any less importance, Infact such studies are the backbone of technological development. I hope to clear few doubts. Feel free to add your comments. #phd #Phdlife #phdstudent #life #job #research #student #university #institute #scholar #internship #science #technology #company #role #publication #journal #output #career #development #comparison

A PhD can be really toxic for your mental health. When I considered starting one, Iread an article saying that (a) good supervisor(s) should be the number 1 criteria for choosing a program. 10 years later and looking back, reading about all scholars experiences and comparing to mine, I think this should be communicated to all undergraduate students. I am so grateful that I had Henry Proudhon, Samuel Forest and Wolfgang Ludwig taking care of me (yes, taking care is the right word). Beyond being top-notch researchers, they are fantastic human beings that had at heart to teach, and make me a researcher. How to choose a PhD (in this order): 1. Choose tour team 2. Choose your topic 3. Choose your lab

The worst metric to assess the quality of your work in the PhD BY FAR is the number of publications. This is because there are a lot of factors outside of your own personal quality and effort that will determine the number of publications in your PhD. For instance, you might be joining a large group with many running experiments that took years to build, and then it is so easy to contribute conceptually or theoretically and see the fruits of the contribution as X number of publications per year. On the other hand, you might find yourself as the one building the experiment and the lab from scratch, and maybe end up with a single publication in your PhD showing that the basic experiment is running. Although in the second case, you are probably more skilled at the physics and engineering side of that particular experiment more than anyone in your group (You are the Prometheus bringing the first flames of that particular physics to the group), you are going to look under-qualified in terms of the number of publications. I don´t know how to get around that except in 3 ways: 1) Take a leap of faith and work on something that truly excites you. 2) If you are a fellow Prometheus like myself, get involved in multiple projects and push your limits 3) Know that your scientific worth is much more than the number of publications, and that will probably show itself quickly if you are active in the community.
