A Short Story: "The Starfish on the Shore" One early morning, an old man walked along the beach after a powerful storm. The shore was littered with thousands of starfish washed up by the waves, stranded and slowly dying. In the distance, he saw a young girl picking up starfish one by one and tossing them back into the ocean. He approached her and said, "Why are you doing this? There are too many. You can't possibly make a difference." The girl smiled, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the sea. "It made a difference to that one," she replied. Let this story remind you that small actions can have a big impact, especially when they're consistent.

I set out on my dog walk empty-handed . By the time I returned, I had a fistful of trash. It’s not my garbage… …but it is my neighborhood. I have a long history of picking up others’ trash. In the Marines, we would often line up for “police call.” We’d stretch out our arms and stand fingertip-to-fingertip. Then we’d march forward slowly in a line. The group leader would yell out, “If it doesn’t grow, it’s gotta go!” The end result was a clean parade deck or drill field. Truth is, I don’t mind picking up others’ trash. > I’m certain I’ve been absent-minded and dropped my fair share. There’s another truth, however. I enjoy the metaphorical tidying up even more. When I head out in town, I often see people not at their best. > Boring job. > Jerk boss. > Generally missing the point of life. Whenever I can, I try to chat them up and lighten their mood. Not my garbage, but they’re a part of my (extended) neighborhood. Again, I’ve had countless people who have similarly brightened my day. Each of us can be a part of the cleanup detail. All it takes is our aspiration, awareness and action. Here’s the thing: > What if ALL of us did this? > How much cleaner would our neighborhoods be? > How much happier would our world be? ♻️ #Leadership #Awareness #Stewardship #TalentOptimization #EnlightenedLeadership

📺🌳 What’s turning Scotland's woodlands into 'ghosts?' 🌳 Our ghost woodlands expert, Kieran Leigh-Moy joined presenter Arlene Phillips on episode 20 of #Landward to discuss the vital role of ghost woodlands and what we're doing to protect them. Highlights from Kieran: 🔊 Woodlands with canopy cover lasting hundreds—or even thousands—of years create a unique home for plants, animals, fungi, and lichens like Lobaria pulmonaria (lungwort). But when this cover disappears, these species begin to vanish too. 🔊 Ancient trees are still producing seeds, but their future is at risk. 🔊 Overgrazing poses a serious threat; in Scotland, 18,000 hectares of upland ancient woodlands have been lost over a 40 year period. Also hear from farmer Martin Girvan, who is already seeing incredible recovery in his protected ghost woodland after just five months.
