I had a chance to attend the first day of the Calcalist כלכליסט conference… and I must admit, the vibrant energy in the room, the presence of so many #founders, #VCs, and international attendees (including those who flew in from Israel) energized me
Despite the challenging time in the Startup Nation, the resilience and rational optimism expressed by the attendees was palpable
The conference was a testament to the resilience of the Israeli tech ecosystem, especially the active tech community in New York
As I navigated the conference, I was reminded of how much I used to love attending networking events in New York. But with age, the need to maximize time becomes increasingly evident. I found that the most beneficial approach was to be 100% focused, particularly when engaging in conversations
Here are three tips I found helpful as I’m trying to be more intentional and present in my interactions these days:
1️⃣ Be 100% focused when talking to people. It's challenging, but the rewards are worth it (trust me, I know, I can be a very distracted person) … but the other party knows when you’re not listening
2️⃣ Follow up promptly. After every interaction, I made it a point to reach out with a simple message… it's a small gesture, but it goes a long way in building relationships. Also, I don’t take it personally when I don’t get a response… many people just don’t follow-up, or even respond
3️⃣ Embrace serendipity and cultivate long-term relationships. These take time, but the investment is worthwhile. We all know opportunities don’t happen on their own, but as a result of trust building which only happens over time (you’d think this is common sense, but it’s worth repeating)
Nothing groundbreaking here, but small things sometimes make all the difference
As I’ll be attending SXSW later this week (if you’re in Austin, lets connect), I'm reminded of the importance of these relationships. I admit, I could have focused more on this in the past. But, it's never too late to start
