We need more information for better decision-making, but what will the new Environmental Information Australia give us? Hugh Possingham and co. provide a nice commentary in The Conversation Australia + NZ. about the law introduced to the Australian parliament yesterday to establish Environmental Information Australia. It's great to see natural capital accounts in the mix, but the specifics are left to the agency's Head. This is not necessarily bad. But the head has two masters, reporting to the parliament in a Statutory role and up the agency line as an officer in the public service. And who will say what is nature-positive? To account for it, we need to know where we are starting, and what, if anything, can be exchanged. Will one glossy black cockatoo equal five grey-headed flying foxes? https://lnkd.in/g5Xa_B82

Field work for an important project on environmental data and information concluded yesterday, after some great days out in the regions. There is such a lot of innovation going on around the motu with capturing information about our environment and working on better ways to tell the important stories. New Zealand's fragmented system for environmental data and information is known, partly as a result of a sustained programme of research and analysis by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment - see the series here https://lnkd.in/gK39Rukt And the expert reaction from the Science Media Centre of New Zealand to the fourth report (in 2022) here https://lnkd.in/gCDa2r-6 A key gap is not just the deficiencies peppered through the biophysical information, but data on the retrospective evaluation of policy effectiveness is particularly scant. If you're keen on seeing what is available however, then here's a few publicly accessible locations that might be of interest... The National Environmental Data Centre, maintained by our Crown Research Institutes is here https://nedc.nz/ StatsNZ (sometimes linking through to the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao website) maintains an 'environment' section of key stats here - https://lnkd.in/gUrHvXBa National scale reporting by MfE can be found here - https://lnkd.in/ggtWMCBi Collective interface LAWA (Land Air Water Aotearoa) can be found here - https://lnkd.in/gT-aJ-7Y 34,000+ datasets of all kinds can be found here, including on environmental topics https://data.govt.nz/ Regional councils tend to store and make available considerable amounts of data and information on their own website, like this example from Waikato Regional Council https://lnkd.in/gkijZzF8 Some special projects are also worth highlighting, like this interactive map maintained by Taranaki Regional Council which allows community members to report sightings of the Nationally Critical Matuku-hūrepo (Bittern). The map is here - https://lnkd.in/g6WTMTs7 And read more about the initiative here - https://lnkd.in/gTzfGxYw

Hi #community! Do you want to know, are you concerned and/or curious about the #environmental performance of/in your #country? Take a look of the "2024 EPI (developed by Yale University)" which combines key indicators across issue categories from #climatechange and #airpollution to #wastemanagement, #sustainability of #fisheries, #deforestation and #biodiversity protection. Some results, for the case of #Mexico, are very poor, worryfing and dissapointing but expected ;( this important reports are trascendental for decision-making proccess and for the construction of #publicpolicies on those regards, as well as to know what else we can do from the individuals to the collective to improve our #nationalenvironmentalperformance ... I hope this info is useful and of your interest, warm regards, and let´s take care of #environment #nature #biodiversity because they can´t wait ;) https://lnkd.in/gZcNkUx3
