(...) Sky’s news team still edited a truthful news report to make it untruthful. The only conclusion one can draw is that they did so to mislead their audience. They didn’t make a mistake. They didn’t act out of ignorance. They knowingly aired disinformation. They intentionally peddled fake news. That’s something very hard for most of us to accept. It requires a troubling recalibration, a shift of perspective, if we are to understand the world we live in. But doing that is the only way to make sense of some of the most significant events that have unfolded over the past two decades. The problem wasn’t, as you feared, you. You weren’t going mad. Your suspicions were justified. You were being lied to. The media was gaslighting you. (The Guardian made a correction to a package of video footage on Saturday 9 November.) The Dutch photographer who filmed these events is still imploring news sites to correct the error. Examining the issue in a segment dedicated to uncovering instances of fake news, France24 this Wednesday reported that the BBC, Wall Street Journal and CBS News were still running incorrectly captioned footage. Casting the Amsterdam violence as purely antisemitism has helped buttress the far right. The Dutch government is dominated by the Party for Freedom (PVV), helmed by the anti-Islam, anti-migrant Geert Wilders. And this party is pursuing a well-worn script deployed by the far right across Europe: championing Israel, pretending to care about antisemitism, and using both to push rampant Islamophobia. The movement’s most prominent organization is the Seasteading Institute, which aims to “reimagin[e] civilization with floating communities” and was founded by none other than economist and free market evangelist Milton Friedman’s grandson, Patri Friedman. The younger Friedman, a former coder at Google, received his seed funding from Peter Thiel, the billionaire co-founder of PayPal and the spy tech firm Palantir, to start the institute. As Thiel pronounced at the time: “The nature of government is about to change at a very fundamental level.” Silicon Valley tech barons have set their sights on new frontiers for human life. In addition to Thiel’s dream of floating communities at sea, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos talk about colonizing space. Balaji Srinivasan and Marc Andreessen call for the territorialization of online communities into so-called network states or “start-up societies.” All these aspirations are rooted in a desire to withdraw from existing polities and to escape their high taxes, regulations and the disorder of liberal democracy. It’s a yearning for new forms of self-governance and citizenship. In other words, they are political exit projects. Ik ben zeer gegrepen door Eric Fassin's nieuwe boek, waarin hij de centrale rol van anti-intellectualisme in de huidige autoritaire politiek analyseert, en academici wijst op hun cruciale democratische rol. Uit de inleiding: "The point is to consider intelligence as a political issue. Democratic politics require intelligence from the citizenry— not just from intellectuals or educated citizens, but from the population in general. Not so with anti-democratic politics. Authoritarian rule, whether neofascist or simply “illiberal,” thrives on the stupidity of the populace." "Neofascists work to exacerbate an anti-elitism targeting cultural elites and, along with them, intelligence. On the contrary, democratic politics is premised on a belief in the potential of collective intelligence. What intellectuals, as a social category, should strive for is to make more people desire to work at being more intelligent, and thus, to find bullshit less desirable."

Great perspective on why we do what we do.

Drie dikke onafhankelijke rapporten over ernstige oorlogsmisdaden in Gaza Het is onbegrijpelijk dat de Nederlandse regering zo ontzettend ver af staat van alle bevoegde deskundigen en gerechtshoven. Het enige wat ze niet kan doen, is achteraf zeggen dit niet te hebben geweten. Ik raad iedereen aan die slechts zijdelings via nieuwsmedia een en ander volgt, om eens kennis te nemen van wat onafhankelijke deskundigen over het conflict melden. Dan wordt waarschijnlijk duidelijker waarom mensen zich zo druk maken over dit conflict. Deze rapporten laten niet na om de daden van zowel Hamas als Israel te onderzoeken, rapporteren en langs de meetlat van het internationaal recht te leggen. Het zijn rapporten van onafhankelijke deskundigen, die voor geen enkele regering of overheid werken. Het meest bijzondere - en hetgeen dat voor mij onbegrijpelijk blijft, en mij drijft tot het delen van informatie, analyses en ja (af en toe) ook wat activisme over dit conflict, is dat dit instanties zijn waar altijd en immer gehoor aan wordt gegeven. Altijd worden deze deskundigen serieus genomen, en wordt buitenlandbeleid afgestemd op de onderzoeksresultaten. Zeker in Nederland, als vaak trotse thuishaven van internationale gerechtshoven. Altijd, behalve in dit conflict. Ik vind het ontzettend belangrijk dat er naar eer en geweten informatie wordt gedeeld. Dat er met integriteit en zoveel mogelijk objectiviteit naar beleid en gedrag wordt gekeken. Van iedere partij in een conflict. Mensen hebben het recht correct, inhoudelijk, en onafhankelijk te worden geïnformeerd. En toch lukt dat vaak niet in dit conflict door alle machtsverhoudingen, (lobby-)belangen en politiek. Ook zaken die historici en wetenschappers van allerlei pluimage onberispelijk en onverbiddelijk hebben aangetoond, lijken in het politieke en publieke debat geenszins door te dringen. Zelfs zaken die in de academie slechts consensus opleveren, zijn in het publieke debat controversieel verklaard. Soit, hierbij. Doe er je voordeel mee. 1. Op deze zwarte dag voor Nederland deel ik onderstaande tekst van Extinction Rebellion co-founder Roger Hallam. #rebelforlife “Democracy has two duties - to protect the people from the rich and to protect the people from death. On both counts the current political class are failing. Whilst they protest against nihilistic attacks on their own members, they also responsible for the most violent dereliction of their sacred duty - the duty to protect. For a generation now they have allowed the people to be subject to the violence of the rich - the remorseless decline of public services, the increasing mechanisms of social control, the nauseating moralism that if we work hard and keep our head down we will prosper. The violence of this endless bullshit. For a generation now they have allowed the people to be subject to the violence of death. The ultimate disgrace is our politician’s willingness to trade the end of our societies for the private interests of the carbon lobby - the fossil fuel interest, the agricultural industry, the savage endgame plunder of our world by the forces of capital. People can only take so much of this reality. Most buckle down helpless and hopeless, some resist and are thrown into prison, others take refuge in conspiracies, and a few turn to violence against themselves. Others direct it against their tormentors. The irrationality of this obscene rise of political violence is a mirror image of the irrationality of our obscene politicians. They are an outrageously infantile and cowardly class that continue to administrate the destruction of all we love. All they offer is the final insult - a list of pledges we all know will be broken. Like those before, and those before that. What do they take us for - idiots? Sheep to be led to the slaughter? As Martin Luther King said, we have a choice: Nonviolence or Nonexistence. Some are us are fighting every day for nonviolence - with the power of Powerlessness and the power of Love. I cringe when I see intelligent people quote from a cult figure like Roger Hallam. Hallamism might be an appealing stance for the rebel at heart, but it represents a hopelessly flawed set of assertions in my opinion. In addition, his stance is highly divisive, often violent and offers few solutions. I support the core idea of Extinction Rebellion, that I interpret literally as rebelling against the extinction of life. But I detest Hallamism. Roger Hallam obviously is an anti-capitalist. And from the way he speaks I assume he’s not much of a democrat either. Each and every paragraph in the quote is critical and often intentionally offensive and nowhere in the entire quote there is one solution to be found. All he calls for is violent uprising. And then what, Mr Hallam? I am serious, what do you propose? In defense of democracy, let’s remember it actually contributed to lifting many out of poverty and create public services in the first place. And truth be said, fossil fuels have largely shaped our society, for the good and the bad. Slamming politicians as if they are some kind of evil breed of untermenschen shows no respect nor any gratitude for the people who take on the difficult challenge of leading. Waiting to see the day when Roger Hallam grows enough balls to make himself electable and propose some policies for a brighter future for life on planet earth. That’s the real challenge we are facing. We need people who understand the problems, have the courage to face reality and the wisdom to make decisions aimed at supporting a complex interrelated web of current and future living beings.
