Amazing event in Paris last week: During 3 days, ChangeNOW brought together, probably, the most innovative solutions and impactful changemakers tackling our planet's biggest challenges, to take action. Almost 1.000 companies, 35.000 participants from 120 countries sharing ideas, best practices and building bridges to create opportunities for thousands of key actors of change, in an inspiring and action-oriented event. A fantastic opportunity to meet, together with the Greentech Ventures Capitals, impact funds, foundations, private companies & banks, amazing entrepreneurs, activists and politics in the same place. Lots of wonderful appointments, passionate discussions about brilliant business ideas and how to activate (urgently) the changes we absolutely need for the planet (talent, budget, politics, technologies and behaviours). It was also a magnifique opportunity for Marc García-Durán Huet, Alex Ruiz Busquest & I to discover, for Underwatergardens International, new businesses and practices. It was also very inspiring to meet experts, networks and new players to reinforce our project like Wave-powered desalination solutions, regenerative agriculture and green praxis, revive bee populations, nature based solutions to clean the planet improving the economy and securing food chain, food or pharma based on seaweeds, new eco-materials, IA, education platforms and solutions to protect the biodiversity... At the end, an ocean of solutions to be optimistic. #changeNow #climatechange #blueconomy #greentech #circulareconomy

I felt lucky to represent Biomimicry 3.8 at the GreenBiz Group #Circularity24 conference this week in Chicago. Thanks so much to Dacie Meng, Saji Sam, and Sean Quinn for a fun and inspiring panel discussion! There are so many amazingly smart and innovative people working to make the shift to a #circulareconomy across all sectors. These people and their dedication give me hope, but everyone is feeling the urgency. A common theme across the sessions I attended was, how do we bring this to scale quickly? As Javier Quiñones said, we need to stop conversations that present this as a choice. It's not a choice. We need to start all conversations with the simple truth that it has to be done. And from that starting point, how are we making it happen? You can be part of the solution or you will "fall off the cliff" as Kathya Mahadevan so aptly put it. 💚 #Transparency, #collaboration, progress over perfection, diversifying buy-in, and positioning a pilot as a first step in applying solutions at scale were other important lessons shared. I was also inspired to hear Myrrh Caplan, MBA, LEED Fellow of Skanska talk about using her company's position to support the scaling of startups that are delivering impactful sustainability solutions, even if you don't know if they will succeed or fail - your support will certainly contribute to increasing the possibility of success! This echoes one of lessons learned from how invasive species disrupt ecosystems - redirecting resources towards others that contribute to an alternative flow of resources that benefit you. We need to do much more of this to create change at scale. As Molly Kawahata (below) put it, #hope over optimism. I'm leaving with the knowledge that more people than ever are done with slow progress. I'm hopeful for the ecosystem shift. I'd love to bring more #biomimicry to the conversation to help accelerate the shift. Onwards!

Our CEO, Mari Granström, opened the impactful panel discussion at the 2nd Mission Arena by Blue Mission Banos Project #bluemissionbanos (BAltic & NOrth Sea). The session, titled "Nurturing the regional innovation ecosystem", focused on on the support measures offered to companies and how they can facilitate success for startups in innovative blue sectors. The session involved active contributions from participants, which will help shape regional priorities. In the end, Mari revealed the action points that Origin by Ocean will be focusing on regarding the mission. One of the major focuses is, of course, regeneration. We want to make the value chain used for the chemical industry regenerative. As for the business support part of the mission, it also involves educating consumers about the value chain. Most people don't completely know what ingredients are used in their everyday products. It makes a big difference what you use at home, as most things we use on land end up in the waterways and oceans. Therefore, increasing awareness of the choices consumers make when buying products is vital. From this mission, we can actually say that we implement value chains that have an impact all the way from the feedstock, so from sea to land and land to sea. #OriginbyOcean #BlueMissionBANOS #balticsea #regeneration

Climate tech startups remain central in accelerating the global transition, raising questions about the investment landscape and the impact of regulatory shifts on specific markets. Last week, Alessa Berg, Founder and CEO of Top Tier Impact, moderated a panel on the future landscape of climate tech VC investing. The discussion centred around potential opportunities spanning various sectors such as biodiversity, biomaterials, and hardware, while also addressing the influence of regulatory changes on investment choices. Here are some key insights from our panelists: “It’s really smart for startups building in biodiversity and nature tech to think thoughtfully about their go-to-market strategy. Instead of going straight maybe to corporations, you work with utility companies or like cities and governments and local.” - Karen Sheffield, MBA, Founder and Managing Partner at Pachamama Ventures “If you're able to produce the same chemical from renewable feedstock in a more localized facility, that de-risks the supply chain. And this is often overlooked in discussions when it comes to cost parity with fossil-based materials.” - Wouter Van de Putte, Investment Director at Capricorn Partners “Everyone should be aware of a new standard in the voluntary markets called ABACUS. ABACUS was created by amazon.com and Vera, which is the voluntary carbon registry. So frankly, in my opinion, about 75 to 80% of former voluntary credits will be washed away. They'll be useless, I saw this happen under the Kyoto Protocol with CDM projects the same thing happened. So, higher quality credits are needed in the voluntary markets.” - Peter Fusaro, Founder of Wall Street Green Summit “There’s $30 billion that’s currently being deployed from the Inflation Reduction Act, and the first priority of the office of clean energy demonstrations is green hydrogen.” - Diana Sankovic, Venture and Private Equity Investor “A lot of focus has been placed in energy and transportation mobility in the past, but I'm hoping that topics like water, agtech, and circular economy are going to come to the forefront of climate tech investing in 2024.” - Sophie Endl, Principal at Active Impact Investments #futureofsustainability #greentechopportunities #climateresilience #biodiversity
