An excellent report from TSB on the loss of containers and subsequent fire on the Zim Kingston in 2021. https://lnkd.in/eThirAt9 Two key take aways: 1. The impacts of parametric rolling as a causal factor in the container loss, and the continued efforts required by the IMO to further refine training and tools for masters and crews to better identify and reduce risk of parametric rolling 2. While the overall actions across multiple agencies resulted in an effective response. There are gaps in the Canadian maritime response regimes in dealing with complex maritime emergencies. Ably noted by Captain Ivan Lantz in the Master Mariners Newsclips, the MMC strongly recommends that Canada evaluate a Marine Emergency Response Manager that can enact large scale responses across federal departments and also consider adapting regulatory models such as the US requirements that shipping companies maintain emergency and incident response agreements with 3rd party experts #TSB #MMC #seafarers #maritimesafety #IMO #marine #mariners #containers #accidents #safety #

Maritime Security Bulletin and Advisory Re: A Fire Broke out Aborad the Chemical Vessel Annika (4.5) Kilometers from Mecklenburg Bay, Germany Issued by: Sanborn Analytics Contact: outreach@sanbornanalytics.us Phone: +1 (617) 539-6114 Media Credit: G Captain (see link) Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin and advisory to inform the maritime shipping community and armed naval forces at sea of a fire on a Chemical tanker off the coast of Mecklenburg, Germany. On Friday, October 11th, 2024, a fire broke out aboard the German-flagged oil and chemical tanker Annika in the Baltic Sea, northeast of Kühlungsborn, Germany. The 73-meter-long vessel, carrying approximately 640 tons of oil, experienced a severe fire in the engine room. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated, and all seven crew members were safely evacuated by the rescue boat WILMA SIKORSKI shortly after 10 a.m. local time. Several rescue and firefighting assets, including the rescue cruiser ARKONA, the offshore tugboat Baltic, and the multi-purpose ship Arkona, were dispatched to the scene. However, firefighting efforts continued throughout the day as the engine room remained ablaze. As of 3:28 p.m., authorities decided to tow the Annika* to Rostock, where firefighting operations would be more manageable at a land berth. The incident occurred in the Bay of Mecklenburg, approximately 4.5 kilometers from the German coast. Precautionary measures were swiftly taken, closing both the surrounding sea area and airspace within a 3-nautical mile radius to ensure the safety of maritime and aviation traffic. Germany's Federal Accident Command has assumed control of the incident's management, with ongoing efforts to monitor the condition of the *Annika*, currently assessed as stable. The initial response was coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Bremen, under the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked (DGzRS). This advisory serves as a precautionary update to maritime operations in the Baltic Sea region, and ships are advised to avoid the restricted area until further notice. #maritimesecurity #germany #eu #europeanunion #berlin https://lnkd.in/g_JqQ4QX

Maritime Security Bulletin and Advisory Re: South African Maritime Authorities (SAMSA) Earlier Today Evacuated An Offshore Supply Vessel Approximately (48.5 Nautical Miles) South of Mossel Bay in the Western Cape Province Date: September 12th, 2024 Issued by: Sanborn Analytics Contact: outreach@sanbornanalytics.us | (+1)(617)539-6114 Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin and advisory to inform the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of an evacuation by South African Maritime Authorities. On September 12th, 2024, a 15-member crew aboard the offshore supply vessel MV AM PRIDE was successfully rescued off South Africa’s southern Cape seas after their vessel caught fire and had to be abandoned. The fire broke out approximately 48.5 nautical miles south of Mossel Bay in the Western Cape province. The vessel, measuring 66.6 meters in length and 16 meters in width, was operating under the flag of the Marshall Islands. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) reported that the fire was first detected at around 10:30 AM. The fire was located in the ship’s messroom and quickly escalated, rendering the situation critical. Adverse weather conditions, including wind gusts of up to 30 knots and 3.5-5 meter swells, further complicated rescue efforts. A MayDay relay was immediately issued by the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town, requesting assistance from nearby vessels. However, the rescue operation was ultimately conducted by a PetroSA helicopter, which successfully retrieved all crew members from life-rafts and safely evacuated them to George. Media Credit: Maritime-Executive Sanborn Analytics reminds all maritime operators to review emergency response protocols and maintain readiness for unexpected incidents at sea. #maritimesecurity #southafrica #africa https://lnkd.in/e2vBPuHi

Industry Associations express their deep concern over the tragic loss of life and injuries suffered by the crew of MV True Confidence in an attack in the Red Sea on 6 March 2024. The loss of life and injuries to civilian seafarers is completely unacceptable. Merchant vessels crewed by civilian seafarers transporting global trade have a right to innocent passage through the region without the threat of attack. The frequency of attacks on merchant shipping highlights the urgent need for all stakeholders to take decisive action to safeguard the lives of innocent civilian seafarers and put an end to such threats. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those affected by this terrible event. Yesterday in Washington DC., WSC’s Joe Kramek spoke and testified at the Federal Maritime Commission hearing on the ‘Impact of Current Conditions in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden’. WSC underlines that the safety of seafarers is the first and foremost priority, followed by the safety and security of customers’ cargo and carriers’ vessels and assets. 👷♂️👷♀️🚢 ✅ Many WSC member lines have made the decision to divert their services around the Cape of Good Hope until the security situation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden stabilizes – this requires complex adjustments to global service networks – but these adjustments are ensuring international maritime trade continues to flow. #RedSea #Safety #Shipping Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ewkNfXrD
