WIND PROPELLED VESSELS ARE NOW A REALITY In late March 2024 there were 37 wind propulsion-installed vessels along with 11 wind-ready ships. A critical mass of demonstrator ships is forming in the bulker, tanker, RoRo and general cargo segments. Japan: MOL’s Wind Challenger System Last week, MOL revealed it would install the Wind Challenger hard sail wind propulsion system on coal carrier Kurotakisan Maru III. This is the first time in the world that the Wind Challenger will be installed on an in-service vessel. Germany: ESTE’s Wind-Powered Ship Germany’s shipping company ESTE Shipping will add a wind propulsion system-equipped vessel to its existing fleet of eleven vessels in 2025. UK: WingTek’s Wind Auxiliary Propulsion (WAP) system. UK-based WingTek is developing the WingTek Wingsail Wind Auxiliary Propulsion (WAP) system that complements existing ship propulsion systems - due for completion by March 2025. France: Wind Assisted Propulsion Technology The French government and maritime stakeholders have signed a ‘groundbreaking’ pact for wind-assisted ship propulsion to decarbonize the shipping industry. The objective is to capture 30% of the global market share with French wind propulsion technology. Read more on our news page: https://lnkd.in/gXjzQv_x

A new 24m x 4m Norsepower Rotor Sail™ will soon hit the high seas to power Baltrader and BRISE’s green transition. The installation will be onboard the newbuild vessel, M/V CEMCOMMANDER, which has won the trust and support of the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport's NaMKü project. With the data collected and verified from eight ships already, as well as advanced simulations, Norsepower projects fuel and emissions reductions of up to 14%. This will minimize the carbon footprint of the cement sector’s supply chain - helping save the planet with each spin. With a legacy of cutting over 20,100 tons of CO2 emissions since 2014, this makes us one of the industry’s most reliable clean propulsion systems. The vessels will be capable of crossing oceans without carbon emissions. ▪ The ships will utilize a combination of DynaRig sails and hydrogen fuel cells for propulsion. The design has received approval from the American Bureau of Shipping and is under consideration by the European Maritime Safety Agency. ▪ Veer has secured funding for the project and is in discussions with potential charterers for the ships, aiming for commercial operations to begin in 2027. This collaboration marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the shipping industry. #ZeroEmission #ContainerShips #GreenShipping #HydrogenFuelCells #WindPower #SustainableShipping #MaritimeIndustry #ClimateAction

We have released our first of two newsletters for 2024 (our members and those registered received that at the end of April), now this is public. There are so many developments in the wind propulsion segment, this acts as a peak into this highly dynamic sector - we don't claim to cover everything but we hope this publication will inspire you to delve a little deeper into the sector and the huge potential of wind propulsion to deliver on the IMO 2030 decarbonisation targets. We are delighted that the number of ships installed (+ wind ready) with wind propulsion have effectively doubled in the 12 months to April 2024, and that accounts for 2.5 million DWT of shipping. Four primary wind vessels over 400GT have either entered or are about to enter the fleet and two larger ones are under construction. The next 6 months (before the next newsletter) will be extremely busy and we wish our members, shipping companies and yards involved with installations and builds all the very best!!! P.S. If you would like to be added to the newsletter mailing list, please indicate that in the comments below or send me your email address to admin@wind-ship.org #shipping #shippingindustry #shipsandshipping #windpropulsion #windassist #maritime #sustaibanleshipping #imo2030 #imo2050

Bonjour Gavin, - NEOLINER is 3000m2 of sail area for 13000GT - Club Med is 1500m2 for 15000GT. - The Preussen (https://lnkd.in/duZw-Vta) was 6800m2 for 5000GT… Imagine for a moment the sail surface required knowing that the water to be moved has a mass 830 times greater than the air... these atrophied wings in the traction of these giant ships will in the best case only bring a very small percentage of energy savings... be aware that you are still light years away from the objectives of decarbonization of maritime transport 😬
