Unity - Walls divide. That's why they are built. Centuries ago, the rebuilding of a wall served to bring people together. God had told Nehemiah to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. In addition to providing protection, this wall was a demonstration of teamwork and unity. All members of the team contributed their talents and skills, combining them to achieve much more than they could have done individually. Today it should be that way, especially with all that we are experiencing. Our talents are gifts that God gives us to use in building his kingdom, to help and lift each other up. To start off Principle 2, Critizize to uplift and empower, never to tear down or to destroy, we looked at an interview between Strombo (CBC), and Maya Angelou (it's adorable how she says his last name through that beautiful smile). "If you tell someone over and over again that they are nothing, they account for nothing, they are less than nothing, then eventually they will say, 'oh you think I am nothing? I will show you where nothing comes. And then they will become even worse than what you have accused them of. And the moral of this story is that a person cannot develop character unless they are valued." ~ Maya Angelou We were asked to first think of how to better treat ourselves, and how we would like to be treated by others, as well as thinking of times where we didn't uplift others and how we might change our reactions given what we have learned from Maya. "It is very tempting to tell someone who is engaging in bad behavior that they are nothing. Emotionally, it feels very rewarding; we are positioned to be the good guys and they the bad guys. Heroes and villains are how we see the world when really there are heroic and villain-esque tendencies in every single one of us. Kyla Scanlon I've been thinking about this post all day now and I think it's important to address a couple of things. 1) The poll conducted by Harris was for the Guardian on the US economy in September 2023, not recent information. It's important to note the Guardian has not made poll demographics available, there is no detail of how many participants were interviewed, what their educational background is, political affiliation, etc. All of this is information that could potential contribute to biases in answering these questions. 2) Unemployment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor defines unemployment as the percentage of the labor force that is unemployed against the total labor force. The full definition of 'employed' and 'unemployed' can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g3jZFcqv but suffice to say it's certainly a more nuanced figure. At the time of the report, the figure was 3.8% where the previous low was Feb 2020 at 3.5%. The previous relative low was Feb 2007 at 4.5%, Before that Apr 2000 had unemployment at a low of 3.8%, so I'm not really sure where the near-50-year-low figure of speech is coming from. 3) Media-Literacy Crisis: I think it's slightly unfair to turn around on the consumer and say "the data looks good, why don't you feel good?" - Inflation has come down to a quasi-target value of ~3%, which is likely sustainable from Fed Chair Jerome Powell's perspective, but the inflation rate is compounding upon the consumer. Looking at the price of eggs (APU0000708111), with September 2020 as the base value ($1.353/doz), it's increased to (at the time of this poll) to $2.065/doz - a 53% increase in price. The price of ground beef per pound (APU0000703112), with September 2020 as the base value ($4.076/lb), has increased to (at the time of this poll) $5.109/lb - a 25% increase in price. One more statistic for reference, the price of boneless chicken breast per pound (APU0000FF1101), with September 2020 as the base value ($3.302/lb), has increased to $4.229 - a 28% increase in price. Meanwhile, the average hourly earnings of all employees in the private sector (CES0500000003), with September 2020 as the base value ($29.51) has increased to (at the time of this poll) $34.01, a 15% increase, which hardly seems proportional to the increase of the basic food costs. Corporate Profits After Tax (without IVA and CCAdj) (CP) with a base value of $2,534.949 in Q3-2020 has even increased to $3,017.805 in Q3-2023, (a 19% growth) outpacing wage growth by 4%. All of this information was gathered from FRED, please feel free to double check my figures. It seems slightly irresponsible to blame media literacy on the understanding of figures when it seems the figures themselves are matching the own story they're telling, but maybe not the full picture of what's going on.
