I think it is my "fiduciary duty" as an engineer to say that: - Is a passkey multi-factor authentication method? Yes, most of the time. - Can RPs (websites) confirm that the passkey is presented after additional (biometric/knowledge) authentication factor? Sometimes yes, but most of the time no. Passkeys can be created and managed by anyone and RPs can't tell (for sure) who are managing the passkeys. Exceptions are some hardware keys that provide attestations. - Does it mean passkeys are unsafe? No way. Passkeys are still much more secure way of authentication than passwords. Only those who desperately care about the security AND have a way to recover the users account as securely should care about it (attestations, etc.). There are so much more to care about. Is your account recovery flow secure enough? Don't care way too much about the strength of your front door if your back door is open or there is no fence around. I wrote a blog article in Japanese: "Is a Passkey really a Multi-factor Authentication? Just Use It Without Worrying Too Much." https://lnkd.in/gP2c3iJA
There have been a few blog posts (and resulting social media and forum discussions) going around the past few weeks about #passkeys, mostly painting them (or organizations who have been working hard to bring passkeys to users all over the world) in a negative light. Many of the responses have been accusatory, conspiratorial, or just plain incorrect. In an effort to clear some of this up, we (👨💻 Matthew Miller, myself, and other contributors) are planning to add a "Misconceptions about passkeys" page to passkeys.dev and we could use your help! In the comments for this post (or on GitHub, see below), let us know what you think the top misconceptions about passkeys are, or what questions you have about them or the ecosystem. They could be your questions / comments or things you've heard. You can also add them directly to this issue on GitHub: https://lnkd.in/e3QdBXrw, or if you don't want your comments shown publicly, feel free to DM me here or on any social platform (https://timcappalli.me).
