Today is World Homeless Day 🌍 A day when we can come together to raise awareness of homelessness, globally, and in our communities. Every October, we promote World Homeless Day (as part of World Homeless Week) with the goal of spreading awareness and empowering each of us to take action. It is a time to reflect on the challenges individuals and families face without a stable place to call home. A challenge faced by over 300,000 people in England alone. Our guide ‘How to Help Homeless People’ is available to download now, offering practical tips and advice on how to get involved and make a positive impact on the lives of homeless people. Today marks the first day of Homelessness Week 2024. 45% of homelessness for women and children is primarily caused by domestic and family violence. On average, homelessness services across Australia are turning away almost 300 people each day, 80% of whom are women and children. Homelessness caused by domestic violence is preventable, and we all have the power to make a change. This Homelessness Week, we’re asking you to join our movement and pledge to stop violence and prevent homelessness for women and children. No woman should have to choose between escaping violence and having a roof over her head. By signing our pledge, you can help us build safer futures for all. We’re stronger together. Sign the pledge here: https://lnkd.in/gCDruDTp

Call Unanswered, a research report by Homelessness Australia was launched today in Canberra. This report provides a sobering snapshot of what our frontline staff see each day: Entry points are under pressure from demand that simply can't be met. During a two-week period in September, along with 22 other specialist homelessness services across Australia, staff at our entry points kept a record of the number of people they couldn't see, phone calls they couldn't answer and emails they couldn't respond to. Results show that 83% of services were unable to answer phone calls at times, 74% couldn't respond to urgent emails; and nearly 40% of services were forced to close their doors during operating hours. When we can’t support people who come to our entry points, they have to return to unsafe situations. They are forced to remain in violent homes, sleep rough on the street, stay in hotels, sleep on couches or in cars because there is nowhere for them to go. This important research is at the heart of Homelessness Australia’s new campaign, #NoOneTurnedAway which we wholeheartedly support. We join the campaign to advocate for increased funding for homelessness services, more investment in prevention, and the expansion of Housing First programs. Everybody deserves a safe night’s sleep, and nobody should have to wait for support. Join the campaign and read the full report here 👇

Today for Homelessness Week, take a few minutes to watch this wonderful video from Link Wentworth and Women's Community Shelters: https://lnkd.in/gQg9pGPe It shows a snippet of the amazing impact innovative and well thought-out solutions to homelessness, like 'Meanwhile Use' accommodation, can have to help those in need, such as women and children leaving domestic violence. 'Meanwhile Use' refers to making use of properties that are underutilised or in the planning cycle to provide accommodation to those fleeing dangerous situations or needing shelter. It's putting properties that would otherwise just be sitting vacant to excellent use! 🏠 With women over 55 being the fastest growing cohort of people experiencing homelessness in Australia, Beecroft House (shown in this video) is one Meanwhile Use property that has provided much-needed shelter and care to women like Shirley. 🏠 This week is Homelessness Week 2024. Did you know that the main reason people seek homelessness support is because of issues with their housing and finance, closely followed by family and domestic violence? 👉 On any given night, 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness. 👉 In 2022-23, over 273,600 people were assisted by homelessness service, but 108,000 people were turned away. 👉 That equals 295 people a day being turned away because services are overstretched. 👉 80% of those being turned away were women and children, many of whom are fleeing family and domestic violence.
