This graph produced post conversion c1978 showed how the gas industry transitioned between three types of gas between the early 1960’s and 1977. Originally gas was produced from coal (except oil used for peak demand). This was a gas composed from hydrogen (c52%) but had carbon monoxide (c6.5%) and a range of hydrocarbons included. The gas industry then transitioned to a gas produced from refinery byproducts (naphtha & tail gases). This had a higher hydrogen content and lower carbon monoxide content, the plant used was all new replacing the old coal gasworks. Then in 1966 the decision was made to switch to natural gas. This gas rich in methane and other hydrocarbons required no manufacturing plant but required a new transmission system and storage to bring it ashore from the North Sea and maintain supply. It is in no doubt a major accomplishment of the adaptability of the gas industry that it was able to undertake two energy transitions in less than two decades.
