Writing this feature on #Canada's low-carbon #ammonia export projects to #Asia was incredibly insightful, highlighting challenges similar to those faced by #LNG projects, such as permitting, construction, transportation, and cost issues. Some of the West Coast's competitive advantages are affordable #natural gas feedstock and shorter #shipping route to #Asia, avoiding the #PanamaCanal. However, regulatory challenges in domestic rail transportation from Edmonton to Prince Rupert, along with rail and insurance costs, pose significant barriers to exporting ammonia to markets like #SouthKorea. "To date, we’ve only had three Western Canada projects reach final investment decisions,” said Ross Wyeno, S&P Global Commodity Insights director of global LNG analytics. This analysis is timely, coinciding with Korea Power Exchange's clean hydrogen power generation auction announcement, awarded to KOREA SOUTHERN POWER CO., LTD. (KOSPO) for ammonia co-firing with coal. Interestingly, KOSPO had previously signed an MoU, while non-binding, on October 28 with Hydrogen Canada Corp. to collaborate on developing HCC's low-carbon ammonia export project in Alberta, Canada. Export Development Canada will provide a loan to Kitimat, B.C.-based Cedar LNG of $400 million to $500 million for a liquified natural gas project led by the Haisla Nation on the Wes Coast. The Haisla have partnered with Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline Corp. on a floating LNG facility with a capacity of 3.3 million tonnes of natural gas per year. It is expected to be in service by late 2028. The partners announced a positive final investment decision on June 25 for the Cedar LNG Project. The Haisla have praised the project as a pathway to prosperity and self-reliance that will enable the First Nation to fund its social services and cultural programs without depending on federal payments. But Julia Levin, associate director of Environmental Defence, says federal subsidies to a new fossil fuel project are “disappointing to see,” given the Liberal government’s promise to phase out such subsidies. Canada is trying to monetize its gas production on the global market. Trafigura has entered into a long-term gas supply agreement with Canadian company NuVista Energy. Canadian energy company NuVista, which produces gas from the Montney formation in the Canadian province of Alberta, will supply Trafigura with 21,000 MMBTU per day (about 580-600 thousand cubic meters per day). The purchase price will be linked to the JKM index, a benchmark for LNG prices in Asia. The agreement, which comes into force on January 1, 2027, will be valid for 13 years. It gives NuVista access to global LNG markets. However, it is not specified at whose expense the liquefaction will take place. According to Reuters, the agreement with Trafigura is in line with a growing trend among Montney producers to enter into deals that expand their access to LNG markets. While Canada currently has no operating LNG export terminals, the Shell-led LNG Canada project is expected to begin operations next year, and two other smaller terminals are also under construction in Canada.
