Incredibly robust research by Southern New Hampshire University and EdSights on the positive impact of a conversational AI on student engagement, persistence, and academic success. "Following the pilot's success, SNHU decided to expand Penny's reach, launching the AI in February 2023 to about 125,000 undergraduate online learners and 708 advisors. After the expansion, the SNHU team vigilantly monitored outcomes each term. Even after the expansion, student engagement remained high, and within one-year post-expansion, Penny had received a staggering 2.5 million messages! In addition to proactively identifying persistence barriers, Penny was also addressing approximately 10,000 questions each month, covering a diverse array of topics, including academic queries, administrative processes, and general FAQs. With Penny efficiently managing routine tasks, advisors were empowered to shift their focus to more nuanced interactions and "works of the heart," directly addressing the personal challenges encountered by students and flagged by Penny." https://lnkd.in/gGHriFV4

Call for participation: Pre Service Teachers We are looking for 15 Preservice Teachers who are interested in being interviewed for a project exploring how GenAI is impacting you, as both a Student and a Teacher. As a preservice teacher, you hold a unique perspective—experiencing the impacts of generative AI both as a student in higher education and as an emerging teacher in schools. I invite you to share your thoughts on how GenAI is shaping these two critical spaces in education. > Are you noticing changes in the way you’re expected to work or learn? > How has GenAI influenced your approach to teaching and assessment, and how are these shifts being felt in your coursework or placements? > Are you feeling supported, or has this added new pressures and expectations to your role as both a learner and a teacher? Your voice is essential in understanding the real-world effects of GenAI. You’re not only navigating new technology in your studies, but also preparing to manage its impact in the classroom. This project aims to capture your experiences from both sides of the educational spectrum. If you are a preservice teacher, you are invited to take part in this research. We are looking for diverse perspectives and individual voices. There are two ways to contribute: 1. Complete a short 10-minute survey to share your insights on how GenAI is affecting your dual role as a student and teacher. 2. Volunteer for a follow-up interview to explore these ideas in more depth and help shape the future of teaching and learning in the age of AI. > You can volunteer for the interview by leaving your contact details at the end of the survey. To take the survey and express your interest for an interview go here: https://lnkd.in/g5cwGm2q Your perspective matters—let’s ensure preservice teachers’ voices are heard in shaping the future of education. #GenAIinEducation #FutureOfTeaching #AIandLearning #EdTechSurvey #ShapeFuturePolicies Please share widely!

A good webinar from QS Quacquarelli Symonds on innovative solutions universities are using for international admissions, including: - how universities are flexing their admissions resource to deal with the current landscape - what panellists and participants think about the role of AI in admissions - if you could create international admissions from scratch, what would it look like? https://lnkd.in/eKm3fKC2 #admissions #internationalstudents #universities

Interesting read on the benefits of AI and tools that may close some socioeconomic gaps and help level the playing field when it comes to college applications and the admissions essay.
Rick Clark, #NACAC member and ED of Strategic Student Access at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and David Hawkins, NACAC’s chief education and policy officer, point out that AI could help more students access admission counseling resources. “Whether an institution allows AI or whether they don’t—both are looking for some expression of authenticity in essays. It certainly is still down to the student as to the quality and the depth of what they submit,” said Hawkins. https://ow.ly/LhiS50TfM55 #collegeadmission #collegeaccess

More training for teachers. More rationalisation of what constitutes key skills. More awareness of ethics of learning.
A couple of stories about AI in UK Higher Education caught my attention this month and illustrate once again the urgent imperative for professional development for staff. Universities faced an unprecedented surge in AI-related academic misconduct[https://lnkd.in/ey_48YcA]. Freedom of Information requests to Russell Group universities revealed an unprecedented surge in AI-related academic misconduct cases. The findings expose significant disparities in how institutions track and handle these incidents, with some universities maintaining no centralised records as cases are managed at departmental levels. This fragmented approach highlights a critical gap in the sector's response to AI-enabled cheating. The situation has prompted calls for greater involvement from governments, regulators and technology companies, as universities struggle to address this challenge independently. The varying institutional responses underscore the urgent need for standardised approaches to AI detection and prevention in academic settings. Reading this alongside a second story about the comprehensive survey across 33 UK higher education conducted by Jisc that revealed 24% of teaching staff are incorporating AI tools, though only 13% received institutional support and 18% received proper training. [https://lnkd.in/eN7Aj8n3] indicates the lack of training available in the sector. If we also take into account recent government data about public attitudes to AI [https://lnkd.in/erkBzUJc] we see that awareness of AI was high among parents and pupils and the need for clear policies and ethical considerations apparent. The public concern about over reliance on AI and loss of key skills underscore the importance of addressing both public perceptions and institutional readiness in the journey towards effective AI integration in education. If we want our students to use the tools responsibly we have to move on from merely punitive approaches to dealing with their misdemeanours to a more preventative approach and that means we have to support our staff to be able to help students understand how to use the tools responsibly and effectively. I know from my now time as a Pro Vice Chancellor with responsibility for Staff Development amongst my portfolio that staff development spend is not always prioritised, but at times like this - despite the considerable financial constraints faced by the sector, investment now could pay significant dividends down the line in terms of saving costs on a growing wave of academic integrity cases. #SkinnyonAIED #AI #EdTech #Leaders #technology #Learning #Students For more thoughts like this read the skinny https://lnkd.in/gTaNTRkb

Some great initiatives announced by the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University this week. The Daily Telegraph covered some of this and in particular the announcement of a new series of debates which will ‘reaffirm the importance of free speech’. The Vice-Chancellor said that ‘The spirit of these events will be one of examination and exploration, of curiosity and challenge.’ She also noted that ‘It is clear we need to reaffirm the importance of free and inclusive speech, diversity of thought and vibrant exchange of ideas.’ It is heartening to see these sort of initiatives in some of our universities and I am sure that those of us in schools can learn from what they are doing. It is absolutely vital that our lessons and our extracurricular offerings help students to consider a diverse range of reviews and to genuinely and critically engage with them. Once again, AI actually comes to mind for me - there is of course a danger that if not used carefully AI answers standardize how we think and our intellectual life becomes rather ‘mediocre’. It is really important that schools consider how to ensure that the life of the mind does not become ever narrowed in the modern world. Here are a few quick thoughts of mine on some practical things we can do in our lessons: 1. Ensure our lessons expose students to a diverse range of views 2. Teach students how to listen carefully to points and to respond in a respectful manner 3. When using AI, teach about its limitation and biases as well as showing ways of prompting that promote more diversity - eg simply asking AI to respond to a query from a variety of perspectives can help 4. Above all, model and inculcate a questioning spirit, in which academic endeavour is more about asking and learning than knowing all the answers Link to article in comments.
