I just watched the Panel statement on the publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report. It's essential watching for anyone in the construction industry - and in particular the statement by Thouria Istephan, which starts at 28:23. Some particularly important extracts from her very moving statement: "Since the fire, the government has passed the Building Safety Act. The Act is welcome, but we need to go further." "Our recommendations place new burdens and responsibilities on people and organisations. I make no apologies for that. Put simply, if you work in the construction industry, and you do not feel the weight of responsibility you have for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job." "The change we need to bring about is partly about structures and regulations ..... but the necessary change is also one of culture and behaviours. Change on this scale needs to be owned and led by those of us working in the sector. It is not enough to pass an Act of Parliament and to sit back and to think the work is done. Without change in behaviour, and a recognition that the needs of the people who use our buildings must be placed at the centre of our work, the lessons of Grenfell will not truly be learnt in full." ".... the losses so many people have suffered, and my involvement in this process, has left a mark on me, as a person, and as a professional, which will last far beyond this enquiry." We should all absorb these words, and the Panel's recommendations, and make sure that they make a mark on us, and we do learn those lessons. https://lnkd.in/eFnusM9m

Thanks John Stulen and Woodworks for allowing me the opportunity to speak at this year's conference. I thoroughly enjoy getting up and sharing our journey and projects completed and underway. Another great conference where I felt the shift in conversation is finally happening in mass timber construction. The industry has been trying to prove to the world that Mass Timber buildings are viable for some time now and the conversation is moving from, "look, we can do this" to "ok we've proven this works but what are the other implications of mass timber construction?" Moisture management, fire implications and wrong/false cost understanding are in my view the three main points that as an industry we need to work through together. For this to work and keep working all stake holders need to be part of the solution and not look at each other waiting for someone else to solve it.
