🎤 Meet the speakers for our upcoming event on Understanding Climate Violence 🎤 Journalist Peter Schwartzstein will share many of the key themes and examples from The Heat and the Fury, his recently published book and the first in-depth exploration of climate-related violence for the casual reader. He has spent more than a decade documenting how climate stresses are bleeding into violence big and small, including ISIS’s exploitation of collapsing agricultural conditions to bolster its ranks in Iraq––and the impact of rising seas levels on Bangladeshi piracy. He will be joined by leading profiles in climate security to explore the issue from both global and local perspectives. In what promises to be an engaging conversation, the speakers will dive into real life examples from all around the world. Speakers: Peter Schwartzstein - journalist and author of The Heat and The Fury Peter Schwartzstein is an award-winning environmental journalist and researcher, who has reported on water, food security, and particularly the conflict-climate nexus across more than thirty countries in the Middle East, Africa, and occasionally further afield. Emanuele Fantini - IHE Delft Institute for Water Education Emanuele is a political scientist exploring the intersection between water distribution and conflict, competition and insecurity and how to foster practices of collaboration under such challenging circumstances. Nynke Schaap - PAX Nynke is a project manager at PAX, the Netherlands’ largest internationally operating peace organisation. She will highlight the intersection between climate change and conflict, as well as the intersection between environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges — particularly those affecting women — in fragile and conflict-affected settings like Iraq, Yemen, and South Sudan. Laura Birkman - HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies Laura Birkman is a Senior Strategic Analysist at HCSS and leads a range of projects focusing on the security implications of climate change and is an expert on the water-food-energy nexus. She is a management team member of Water, Peace & Security, an award winning partnership that looks to pioneer the development of innovative tools and services that help identify and address water-related security risks in fragile contexts. The National Adaptation Plan (2015-2030) lays Kenya cross-sectoral priorities in adapting to climate change. During the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), Kenya re-launched the Financing the Locally Led Climate Action, (FLLoCA) program, which is a national program driving locally led climate adaptation by communities. The localization and mainstreaming of climate change adaptation in counties involve integrating communities into local climate change governance, policies, and implementation of community-led solutions in enhancing adaptation and resilience at the local level. On the 4th of November, we will be having a deep dive reflection to reflect on Kenya’s progress in disseminating the outcomes of ACS relating to Adaptation, as well as taking stock on the progress of implementation of the resolution for scaling up adaptation finance, locally-led climate actions for adaptation, sustainable agricultural practices among other innovative approaches for enhancing adaptation and resilience of Kenya’s towards climate shocks ahead ACS@ONE We invite you to ACS@ONE: the First CSO-led Deep Dive Reflections on Key Thematic Areas One Year Post the Inaugural Africa Climate Summit 2023 To register use this link or scan the QR code on the poster: https://bit.ly/acsatonetc #ACSAtONE #ClimateAction #Africa Sellah Bogonko, HSC Bilha Ndirangu Africa Climate Summit GIZ Kenya AGRA KEPSA KENYA Pan African Climate Justice Alliance Kenya Platform For Climate Governance- KPCG

Climate Analytics in collaboration with AGNES AFRICA have developed a Long-Term Low Emissions and Climate Resilient Development Strategies Landscape report for Africa. The report aims to identify the state of play, challenges and opportunities that would enhance the development of #LTLEDS across the continent, building on the lessons learnt and best practices. Currently, only 71 countries globally have submitted their #LTLEDS with 8 being from Africa. 7 of these African countries have received support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, UNDP, FAO, NDC Partnership’s thematic calls on LT-LEDS and NDCs, among others. I Joined government representatives from across Africa in Cameroon to discuss the outcomes of the report and share experiences from different country processes. What struck me, of the 8 African countries that have submitted their #LTLEDS, none of the scenarios presented a timeframe for #peaking of their #emissions, plateauing before a decline towards #netzero target in 2050. This is alarming as these are rapidly developing countries that need to align emissions reduction with national development priorities and sustainable development. Article 4 Para1 of the #ParisAgreement recognizes that #peaking will take longer for developing country Parties and this needs to inform their #Netzero targets. Some of the challenges the countries have presented include; lack of adequate data and national or regional expertise to establish baselines, model macro-economic and GHG scenarios, inadequate finance to facilitate the process and lack of political buy-in. The findings of the report are under review and validation by African Countries to inform a guideline for developing LT-LEDS which will be released soon. Climate policies and financing still don't meaningfully address the needs of conflict & displacement-affected persons. UNDP's policy brief, "Mapping climate mobility hotspot risks: An approach for development organizations to assess risks and responses to climate mobility" emphasizes: » Support to national and subnational counterparts with timely and future-looking diagnostics tailored to local contexts. » Investing in improved situational awareness of climate mobility with key government, private, and non-governmental partners. » Supporting and strengthening policy, programmes and infrastructure to increase adaptation and resilience in areas of expulsion and reception. » Helping embed climate mobility priorities in development plans and planning from the national to the municipal levels.
