The mysterious mechanism that links human gut health and brain health is being studied around the globe and CIFAR researchers are among the leading researchers advancing our understanding of the “gut-brain axis.” Through CIFAR’s Catalyst Fund project and cross-disciplinary meetings, researchers Brett Finlay and Laurel Trainor collaborated and published a study that looked at different types of gut bacteria present in infants and how this connects to their early cognitive development. Specific brain cells known as layer 5 pyramidal neurons play a vital role in how our brains process information. New research from the de Wit Lab, published in Nature Communications, sheds light on how differences between two types of layer 5 pyramidal neurons—IT and PT neurons—affect their roles in the brain and their susceptibility to neurodevelopmental conditions.
