What is the Nairobi Declaration on Fertilizer and Soil Health, and how does it contribute to Africa’s broader restoration agenda?
Signed earlier this year, the Nairobi Declaration serves as Africa's continental blueprint for tackling soil degradation—a challenge deeply intertwined with food security, poverty, and climate resilience.
The declaration reflects a commitment by African member states to implement a 10-year action plan focused on critical interventions in policy, markets, and capacity building, address the accelerating impact of climate change on soil health, and center soil restoration as a cornerstone of food systems transformation.

No, it's still not on the declaration. In Africa, fertilizer and soil health is the continental blueprint in terms of how Africa wants to go forward with respect to addressing the challenges that we face as a continent with respect to degradation of our souls. This was signed at the beginning of this year. It is a commitment by African Member States in terms of the priority actions that they want to take with respect to addressing issues of soil health on the continent. You know the the declaration endorsed the 10 year action plan that outlines the critical interventions that need to be taken with respect to policy, with respect to markets, with respect to building. Capacities that, you know, countries need to address issues around soil health. So this is a, a commitment of intent for African states with respect to, you know, addressing soil health because there is a realization that we cannot have a food systems transformation until we deal with the issues, you know, that are related to, to soil health and the the rate of degradation, you know, is worsening. You know, you think about the impact of climate change as well in terms of ourselves. Climate change is actually accelerating the rate of degradation. So it has become super critical and urgent for us to address issues related soil health. So, you know, the, the, the Nairobi declaration is a statement of intent by African heads of state to decisively address, you know, the issues that we face as a continent and to really put it at the center of how countries go forward with addressing the challenges of food security. And poverty on the continent.
