With an astonishing output of over 5,000 horsepower, this 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged engine surpasses the performance metrics of any Bugatti engine. Imagine driving a car with 3,048 horsepower on regular fuel, even on US premium standards of 93 octane. It seems almost unreal, but it's a testament to the innovative capabilities of SME. Founded by Steve Morris, this company pushes the boundaries of what's possible in engine design. SME specializes in creating high-performance engines for race cars and extreme street vehicles, producing fewer than 100 engines annually. The centerpiece of their portfolio, the SME/Devel V-16, features a unique combination of low-tech and high-tech elements. Despite its seemingly archaic two-valve per cylinder setup and 12.3-liter displacement, the engine includes advanced features like dry sump lubrication, hydraulic camshaft, and drive-by-wire throttle control. Crafted with precision, the engine block and the massive 1.22-meter-long crankshaft are each milled from a single piece. While leveraging the extensive experience gained from LS-engine technology, SME has also incorporated principles from GM Big-Blocks and Ford V8 engines, with the engine software developed in-house. The SME/Devel V-16 starts at an impressive 3,048 horsepower but can reach up to 5,077 horsepower under optimal conditions with reinforced components and higher boost pressure. Initially developed for the Devel Sixteen hypercar, the engine was showcased at the International Motor Show in Dubai between 2013 and 2017. Despite the ambitious specifications, the Devel Sixteen has not entered serial production, with the project currently on hold due to high production costs. The #STAVE project (global stability of road vehicle motion) aims to increase the active #safety of road #vehicles to reduce #fatalities. STAVE project studies the global #stability of the motion of road vehicles with a human or a non-human driver. The aim is to characterize the typical nonlinear behaviors of vehicle-and-driver subject to #disturbances like evasive steering maneuvers, wind gust, pot-hole excitation and so on. The knowledge of such typical behaviours may enable in the future the derivation of proper control laws either for a vehicle with a human driver or for a vehicle without a human driver. STAVE aims to enable (National or) International Regulatory bodies to issue regulations or standards based on a sound theoretical basis. Education of governmental staff performing homologation of automated vehicles is also a goal of STAVE. STAVE defines some validated models of vehicle-and driver and performs a #bifurcation analysis to characterize typical nonlinear behaviors. A driving #simulator is used to understand and reproduce hard handling maneuvers performed on track. Both road vehicles and motorsport vehicles are considered to cover all of the possible limit nonlinear behaviors. A number of controls are considered to be used with or without the human driver.
