How to have a bad systems engineering career: Many years ago David Patterson wrote good advice on how to have a bad career in research. In a similar vein, here is checklist for seeing if you are making progress on your path to having a poor system engineering career. You are making progress if you: 1. Believe that you are upstream in the hierarchy 2. Start drawing “V” diagrams on the development model that starts with system engineering and ends in integration and test 3. Believe that your Ph.D automatically makes you a systems engineer 4. Believe that your job is to write specs and design docs that “others” will implement 5. Even worse, believe that other engineers are waiting for your specs 6. And then overthink some aspects and under think others in that document 7. Deliver designs in an open loop fashion to the implementation engineers (without winning their mindshare with a negotiated design … and an iterative and collaborative process) 8. … and then refuse to collaborate all the way through implementation 9. Refuse to be embedded into the implementation teams (either hardware, software or ASIC) 10. Refuse to do the hard, grunt work of implementation (like generating vectors, writing test cases, sitting in the lab and testing) … 11. Refuse to walk into, walk next to or walk near a lab and therefore refuse to learn how to use a signal generator or a spectrum analyzer or … 12. Stay in the realm of concepts and not develop a sense for numbers pertinent to your domain and system 13. Believe that your understanding of how the system works is a good proxy for the actual thing working (no puddings and no proofs are required for you) 14. Believe that you are a specialized expert (“Oh, I am a PHY systems engineer. That other person is MAC systems engineer”) 15. And in the process not develop a full view of the system and its consistency or lack thereof 16. And therefore have no skill to simplify 17. Encourage your lead to build multiple “systems teams” - and then let the design and implementation teams sort out the confusions that arise from having multiple systems teams 18. Simply refuse to understand that all (good) engineers are systems engineers
