Netflix made some great adverts but this one stuck with me: https://lnkd.in/eqqYhuGm I like the filming techniques, framing, diverse angles, and the quality of the shots, it all flows well. But above all, I appreciate the story! Most of us consuming content identify with Norma. The message behind this promo is clear and simple: Embrace what you like, and don't box yourself in because you have to have a very specific interest and attitude around content. And it hits well with most of us Netflix users. It's not easy to produce a video promo that resonates with your audience and customers, but when done right the results for your brand are long-lasting.

Disney's entire broadcast portfolio - including ABC, Disney+, ESPN, and everything else - falls to #2 in July ratings to YouTube, which continues its ascent. Overall in 2024, Disney still leads. But this trend will continue. A brand new, major breakout horror hit - "Milk & Serial" premiered (for free!) on YouTube, and in three weeks, has quickened the pulse of over half a million people. "Cocomelon," "Cobra Kai" and the pilot for "Adventure Time" all aired and gained traction on YouTube FIRST. If you're a creator, if you're daring, opportunity exists. THINK. Similarly, WISE INVESTORS in entertainment should start considering a distribution strategy that looks to the long game, and platforms like YouTube and LoorTV.

Over the holidays, I challenged Netflix on its lack of strategy to post the Beyonce Bowl half-time show immediately upon airing as its own shorts asset. There was plenty of debate on why, but in the end, after seeding territory to YouTube, they finally got it up there. But the bigger question really remains, why don't streamers have a shorts content and product strategy in general? Why not own the full consumer conversation around their IP? Its the reason Quickplay announced yesterday that we have come to market with Quickplay Shorts, offering an AI assisted tool to help create shorts content from LIVE and VOD content, and a front-end, social like, vertical format, infinite scroll experience that can be plugged into existing streamer apps. So here is my "short" take on the opportunity in shorts had Netflix had their own destination during Beyonce Bowl - and yes, that's me in the pic on the end, giving my best Cowboy Carter 🤠

Netflix launched kids playlists in recent months. These target under sevens and are available to certain users across the US, France, Brazil and South Korea. From a subject matter point of view these look at learning, routine moments like bedtime, and known favorite content themes such as vehicles and animals. IPs in certain genres, including preschool, need an audience build from the ground up. We know that young audiences are neophobic, they usually need to sample something (a food, a tv show) many times before it becomes a favourite. This requirement fundamentally jars with the must-be-hot-within-28-days-of-launch benchmarks that are notorious at Netflix. Providing opportunities that enable content sampling are tricky when you’re dealing with a flat image homepage. It was much easier with the linear feeds of yester year where you could trial slot times and lead ins quite easily, with a bit of luck the audience would flow where you sent it. This playlist activation somewhat delivers that ability to strategically push viewers into other shows. It will be interesting to see whether Netflix feels the benefit and opts to roll these out globally.
