Mentorship is a powerful tool for career advancement. It provides guidance, support, and access to valuable networks. However, Black professionals often face a "mentorship gap" – a lack of access to experienced mentors who can understand their unique challenges and offer tailored support. Significant evidence suggests black professionals often face challenges in finding mentors. The limited number of Black leaders in pharma creates a smaller pool of potential mentors with a shared black experience. The Black Pharma Mentorship program boasts mentors from diverse ethnic backgrounds who all share a deep commitment to supporting Black professionals and understand the unique challenges they face in navigating the industry. This inclusivity helps bridge the mentorship gap and empowers Black professionals to reach their full potential. Mentorship Matters -A mentor can offer valuable insights and advice on how to navigate the complex pharmaceutical industry. -Mentors can connect black professionals with key players in the industry, expanding their professional networks and opening doors to new opportunities. -Having a mentor who understands and can advocate for you can help mitigate the impact of unconscious bias. Step Into the Experience: A Day with the Terps! Hosted at the Jones-Hill House, home of the Maryland Terrapins football, on Saturday, March 4, 2024, we embarked on an extraordinary journey with the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, DC, our Saturday Leadership Academy, Collegiate 100, and parents. It was a day filled with excitement, inspiration, and unforgettable moments at the University of Maryland, hosted by @Terpsfootball. Immersive Beginnings: Our day kicked off with exhilarating highlight videos, reliving the Terrapins' triumphs from the recent football season, including their remarkable victory in the 2023 TransPerfect Music City Bowl. The energy was palpable as we cheered for our team's success! Unexpected Surprises: We were in for a treat when Head Coach Michael Locksley @coachlocks himself graced us with his presence, offering warm greetings and insightful remarks. Our youth even had the chance to engage in a Q&A session with Coach Locksley, making the experience all the more memorable. Guided Exploration: Splitting into groups, we embarked on immersive tours of the state-of-the-art facility, led by UMD Terrapin student interns. From the cutting-edge training rooms to the in-door practice field, every corner was filled with inspiration and possibility. Empowering Messages: Coaches shared invaluable insights on character development, emphasizing the significance of integrity and resilience in achieving our dreams. Their passionate words resonated deeply, reminding us of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. A Moment of Inspiration: Wrapping up our day, we were honored to hear from Preston Brown, @pgreat81 WR Coach for Delaware State University. His heartfelt speech about overcoming obstacles and finding purpose in coaching left us feeling empowered and motivated to chase our dreams. We all want to make a mark! And with these comes our personal brands. On the way, there are opportunities and challenges. We fall, pick ourselves up, and move on. But it’s not usually the same every day, At times we feel like it’s the end. We need to go into the self-discovery stage, A stage that will give us a different point of view about everything. How do I discover myself? Mentorship emerges as the guidance to everything: 💫 Have meaningful and helpful connections with those that inspire and challenge you. 💫Define your goals and aspirations clearly with the help of a mentor. 💫Let the experiences of your mentor(s) teach and guide you. 💫Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning and growth. 💫Expand your network. As you get guidance and help from your mentor, you will meet with your mentor’s community where you will cultivate a new network. 💫As you progress on your journey, make sure you celebrate every milestone you take. I'm proud to share that I'm officially a graduate of the #McKinseyNext1BFounders program, an accelerator program that helps Black Brand Founders scale their businesses to new levels through Master Degree level education. Just finished reading Empowering Black Youth Through Mentoring by Abra L. Taylor, and I have to say, it's a powerful and timely resource for anyone interested in mentorship, especially when it comes to supporting Black youth. Taylor dives deep into the systemic challenges these young people face and positions mentorship as a vital tool for both personal growth and academic success. What I found especially valuable is her focus on culturally relevant practices—emphasizing that mentors should understand and respect the cultural backgrounds of their mentees. This isn’t just a book on theory; Taylor includes real-life examples, case studies, and practical tools like worksheets and reflection exercises that mentors can use right away. From navigating communication barriers to building trust, this book covers it all. It’s a must-read for educators, community leaders, or anyone looking to make a real impact in their community. 🚨 THE TRUTH: I spent two years in grad school suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Yes, me—the Networking Queen, the Interview Ace, and self-proclaimed Karaoke Star—was fighting an intense internal battle every day just to show up. Behind my smile, I felt a crushing weight to prove myself as a Consortium “diversity” scholarship student and make my father, who had disowned me for religious reasons, finally see me as a success. 🏫 Universities are expected to be SAFE SPACES for learning and growth, but at UNC, I was one of ~10 Black MBA students, living in a city where Confederate flags waved just a few miles off-campus. As a Black woman, I faced dual, intersectional pressures of racial and gender biases, including the stereotype that women only attended business school for their “MRS degree.” Yet, I don’t hold a monopoly on fear or feeling unsafe. We all face it. No matter how we identify. 🔄 Looking back, it’s not surprising that I transitioned from Business & Technology roles to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). And, it’s not a coincidence that I created DEI Success Lab™. DEI isn’t about creating a system of rainbows and butterflies; it’s a tool 🔧 for changing mindsets, breaking barriers, and utilizing strategy and project management processes (business school, I see you) to do so. 📚 DEI Success Lab™ is designed to teach people how to navigate diverse spaces, manage their fear, influence decisions, and do it strategically and with precision. Why A Thirst For Learning Exists: Empowering Young Black Men Through Mentorship At A Thirst For Learning (ATFL), our mission is simple yet powerful: to uplift young Black men through mentorship, education, and character development. Inspired by Medgar Evers’ legacy, our flagship program, the Ambassadors of the Evers Academy for African American Males (A-TEAAM), offers one-on-one mentorship, cultural education, and skill-building to empower these young men to navigate challenges with confidence. Having faced and conquered barriers myself, I understand the vital role mentors play. ATFL connects young men with community leaders who act as role models, guides, and advocates, fostering increased school attendance, higher self-esteem, and improved social engagement. Young men of color deserve to see themselves in positive roles and spaces where they can cultivate character, leadership, and resilience.
