Quantum Italia closes a round thanks to Quantonation!🤝 Straight from Paris, the early-stage venture capital fund Quantonation, specializing in investments in deep physics and quantum technologies, has invested in Quantum Italia, the first investment vehicle entirely dedicated to the quantum field in Italy, founded by Scientifica Venture Capital and the partnership with the non-profit Unitary Fund.🤑 Recently founded, Quantum Italia wants to invest in a sector with inexorable growth such as that of quantum technologies in Italy and abroad, without neglecting the creation of an open ecosystem dedicated to Quantum initiatives together with international stakeholders. In 2021, $2.5 billion was invested in quantum computing, but still very little in Italy.✍🏻 Two are the characteristics that make quantum technologies possible: superposition (the physical properties of quantum entities are undefined until they are measured, which is great for encoding information) and entanglement (quantum entities manifest correlations and mutual influences with each other, once measured). What a strange week for good news! In the summer of 2022, Patricia Leu and I started thinking about what a better Prototype Fund could look like. We thought our ideas were a bit unrealistic - but hey, better dream big! More than two years later, after pages of and pages of proposals, hours of meetings, budgets done and redone, timelines, excel sheets, thousands of post-its and even a full external evaluation, we’re finally here with a new Prototype Fund 🥳 - and I can’t believe how close it is to our first “too wild” ideas! In a nutshell: more money for teams, a second stage funding after the initial phase, a focus on infrastructure & security projects, the possibly to include team members from other EU countries. If you’ve been following our work in the past years, many aspects of this new version of Prototype Fund will be familiar - we’ll still fund early stage Free and Open Source projects only, our initial 6-months funding phase will stay close to what it is now, we’ll keep funding with a rather hands-on approach - with lots of support for the people we fund and coaching with our wonderful partners. With the high amounts of applications we are still receiving and the awesome projects we have been able to fund in the past rounds, we know there’s a strong need to continue to fund early stage FOSS project ideas. Our challenge is to do this in a sustainable way and find ways to help people, projects and communities thrive after funding runs out. We hope that the improvements we were able to bring to the funding program will bring us a few (or many!) steps further in that direction ✨ I am so thankful to all the people who have made this possible: my team at Prototype Fund and my co-director Patricia Leu in particular 💙💗, Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e. V. (Henriette Litta 🙏), DLR Projektträger (Danke Juliane Lukas & Holger Konle !), and of course the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. It’s been a wild ride, but we did it! #Biology #FoundationModels is the BIG thing right now in #Pharma & #LifeSciences. When #ChatGPT (#GPT3 ...) was launched, there was a lot of talk whether one model would dominate the market ... I think now it's pretty clear, with the 100s of models (incl. many open source), that specific language models for specific applications, or even collection of language models orchestrated together is the way forward. We don't need a language model to be able to do "everything" ... for 99,999% of #DrugRnD use-case, i don't need a model that can code ... however a multimodal model that can understand biological text and images ... that makes sense. Also, a smaller model, less computer intensive is definitely more appealing than some of the largest LLMs on the market. I'm glad to see the community pushing for more specialized tools ... it's good for all of us!
