According to the State of the Digital Decade 2023 Report, it currently accounts for around 7-9% of global electricity consumption, a figure that is set to rise to 13% by 2030. What's more, it contributes between 2% and 4% of total greenhouse gas emissions and generates increasing quantities of electronic waste. Against this backdrop, access to accurate, easy-to-understand information on the environmental impact and energy consumption of digital products and services is crucial. As a result, defining a multi-criteria measurement standard for the digital environmental footprint of organisations is a crucial step towards responsible resource management and a transition to a sustainable digital economy. This standard should encompass key factors such as carbon emissions, water use and resource consumption, providing a comprehensive view of the environmental impact of digital activities. This is what Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform Nederland and VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. are proposing in their joint Manifesto for future European Parliamentarians. Consequently, we call on the European Union to create such a standard to encourage organisations to adopt more sustainable and transparent practices, thereby 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆. This is why, in our Manifesto, we are proposing that the European Parliament create new regulations aimed at forcing manufacturers to publish and reduce their ecological footprint. Giving priority to reducing the environmental impact of digital technologies right from the manufacturing stage is a crucial first step towards achieving a sustainable digital future. This proposal is in line with legislative efforts at European Union level. However, these measures are still insufficient to fully meet the environmental challenges we face. It's time to go further by imposing stricter standards and requiring manufacturers to actively reduce their carbon footprint, minimise electronic waste and adopt more sustainable production practices, all in full transparency. The Manifesto co-authored by Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform and Voice highlights the need to put an end to programmed obsolescence and increase the lifespan of equipment. This proposal is perfectly aligned with our previous work, in particular with the Strategic Orientation Report (SOR) 2023 edition, which highlights the disruptions by 2030 and stresses the importance of responsible management of digital waste. Similarly, the 2022 edition already highlighted the challenges and consequences of programmed obsolescence. It also ties in with the REEN law, which aims to encourage a circular economy by promoting the repair and recycling of electronic products. Europe's political decision-makers must continue these efforts and take concrete measures to improve efficiency and promote the sustainable use of equipment. In their Manifesto, Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform Nederland and Voice propose the creation of an eco-design standard for software, incorporating sustainability criteria throughout its development. In the European Union, the REEN law aims to reduce the environmental footprint of digital services by introducing a general eco-design standard. Article 25 provides for the creation of sustainable design criteria for software, demonstrating the political will to promote a more environmentally-friendly approach to the digital sector. In addition, many associations share our vision and are proposing similar measures to integrate sustainability into software design. Prepare strategically and sustainably for Europe's energy and digital transition! #EUElections2024 With the growing use of digital technologies in almost all organisations, the sector's need for rare metals is exponential, even though they are already in great demand in other industries (automotive, electronics, manufacturing, etc.). Rare metal supply problems highlight geopolitical issues. Indeed, 60% of the world's known rare earth reserves are in China, and the European Union is supplied with 98% of its rare earths by this country. Finally, our companies face a major challenge: certain raw materials are either threatened with extinction in the next 100 years, or are already very limited and present a risk in terms of supply, such as magnesium or lithium. This is why Cigref, Beltug, VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. and CIO Platform Nederland propose in their Manifesto to set up an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for critical raw materials, in order to prepare strategically and sustainably for Europe's energy and digital transitions. Let's ensure that European companies are ready for the future and able to face global competition, in particular by ensuring the EU's ecological transition, by strengthening local production of batteries, solar panels, permanent magnets and other clean technologies. Intensify EU strategic research to strengthen its competitiveness! 💪 #EUElections2024 In their Manifesto, Cigref, Beltug, CIO Platform Nederland and VOICE - Bundesverband der IT-Anwender e.V. point out that it is crucial to step up the EU's strategic research initiatives to explore alternatives to current digital technologies. For example, the Quantum Technologies Flagship, launched in 2018, is a large-scale, long-term research initiative with an EU-funded budget of €1 billion, bringing together research institutions developing European scientific leadership and excellence in this field. Targeted research and innovation efforts are essential to strengthen the EU's position in relation to its global competitors. By promoting European competition, innovation and economic growth will be stimulated. This approach also aims to reduce our dependence on certain suppliers and ensure the long-term prosperity of our continent. Together, let's step up our efforts to diversify our technological sources and promote an innovative and competitive digital Europe on the world stage!
