Small and midsized companies should take this as another cyber security cautionary tale. In early April, AT&T revealed that it was the target of a data breach, leaking 73 million users’ personal information. 7.6 million current clients were affected, and over 65 million former users’ data has similarly been leaked. This breach has included leaking passcodes, social security information, names, email addresses, and dates of birth. This data presents a massive threat, as many people’s sensitive information not stored by AT&T could also potentially be accessed using information parsed from this data. The alarm was raised when AT&T discovered that a dataset containing some of the above information was found on the dark web, making it widely accessible to cybercriminals. The company has since brought on cyber forensic professionals to find where the breach had been made, however they have admitted it will take significant time due to the size of the company’s databases. AT&T is cooperating with lawyers, the FTC, and third-party observers to fix the issue and has contacted those affected. However, this action does not secure the already lost data, nor does it protect it from a newly filed class-action lawsuit. An Ohio man filed this lawsuit against AT&T, arguing that negligence and faulty security provisions allowed for the breach, and that proper systems could have prevented this issue. Despite AT&T’s efforts to address this problem, this latest breach is one of several which have plagued AT&T, harming their public image and threatening massive fines and/or legal costs. Although AT&T has the financial resources to withstand these costs, security issues erode public trust and is another blemish on the company’s record of data breaches. Companies not as large as AT&T may not be able to recover from similar incidents. To read more on the story, visit CBS News’ website at: https://lnkd.in/eQ4sxNBF
