DISCUSSION TOPIC: Polyester and Polyamides in Clothing HUGO BOSS is taking the initiative to use 0% polyester + polyamide by 2030. -Big brands often use the idea of 'recycled polyester' as a green-washing tactic, or label a product as wool, cotton, if >60% composition is natural but the remainder is still polyester or polyamide, which leads to: -Micro plastic exposure during washing. - Skin irritation and allergic reactions to chemical dyes and finishes. - Hormone disruption and fertility issues from BPA, phthalates, PEAS used in the production/finishing process. And yes, some countries still use PFOAs too. - Respiratory issues and air pollution from VOCs and particulate matter. How is your business creating a positive change by contributing to a fashion cycle that is healthier for the planet and the human body? I'd love to hear from business owners and professionals from the fashion industry! #sustainablefashion #fashiondesign #fashionbusiness

The fast fashion industry has revolutionized consumer trends but also left a heavy mark on the environment. The rapid production cycles and disposable nature of fast fashion contribute to excessive waste, resource depletion, and high carbon emissions. As the demand for trendy, low cost footwear grows, so does the need for sustainable alternatives. Recycled fibers are emerging as a key solution to this pressing issue. By replacing traditional materials with fibers made from 100% recycled PET, we can significantly reduce the environmental impact of footwear production. Our innovative recycled fibers provide the durability and performance needed in high-quality footwear while supporting a more sustainable production process. Partnering with GreenTech means choosing materials that contribute to a circular economy and reduce the ecological footprint of your products. Last month the POD team had the privilege of attending the British Footwear Association Sustainability Summit 2024. The summit served as a reminder of the critical role sustainability plays in shaping the future of footwear. The day included presentations and discussions on topics such as sustainable design and material selection, assessing environmental impacts, as well as life cycle analysis and leather considerations. We got to hear from brands like Vivobarefoot, River Island, FAIRFAX & FAVOR, Dr. Martens plc, and Nike, who’s speakers shared their insights and innovative approaches to sustainability. Below are our key takeaways: 1. Traceability – It is now more important than ever to investigate our supply chain, from raw material through to end product and consumer, to ensure true ethical and sustainable practices. Vivobarefoot shared, that "Sustainable design is more than just the materials you choose. To ensure you're improving towards truly sustainable products, it’s helpful to align with an approach like Vmatrix to make sure you're covering the most important areas." 2. Partnership – Collaboration is key to driving meaningful change. By working with our value chain partners we can address challenges together to forge strong relationships, creating a valuable chain. Recomme, a circularity platform for brands and retailers, stressed the importance of collaboration in a fast-paced market: "Collaboration is fundamental in a market moving at pace. Make sure you have partners that are one step ahead." Their discussion with the recycling and processing company ReCircled highlighted the crucial role of strategic partnerships. 3. Culture – Sharing product stories is a powerful way to engage customers and inspire positive change to foster a conscious consumer culture. Hearing insights into product and company strategies reassured us that moving towards sustainable practices is a fulfilling journey despite it being complex at times. 4. Hope – Despite daunting challenges, advancements in areas such as regenerative materials and circular solutions are a cause for optimism. Covation Bio PDO tackled the shift from petroleum to plant-based technology, emphasising the potential of regenerative farming: "Regenerative farmed plant-based materials can accelerate the adoption of renewables in the footwear industry." We already can't wait for next year and are putting some of our learnings into practise in the meantime. #sustainability #footwear #fashion #retail
