im in a facebook group for film composers with hans zimmer (yes that one) and i wanted to share a post i made and his response in case it is useful for anyone here :) post: i've seen several posts where newer composers have asked how to best connect with directors. i've then been asked in reply to my suggestion about checking the director's imdb page to see if they have a composer they already work with, how exactly to get that information. if you go to the director's imdb page you will see past projects they worked on. go to the project page, click "all cast & crew" and look at the music dept. then do that for the other projects they've worked on. you can see if they even have a composer listed for the project, and if they do, you can look and see if it is the same person for several or most of their projects, specifically if it is for their recent projects (for example if they had a composer for 5 projects but haven't worked with that composer on the last 3 films might be an opening. if they have the same composer on most of their films but not all of them, they might be open to collaborating. if they have no composer listed or a different composer for each project, they most likely would be open to collaborating). as a note, if they have a composer they seem to be loyal to, asking them to shift their loyalty to you is a bit of a crap move. there are a LOT of directors out there. best is to find one not already in a solid working relationship with an existing composer and find one who seems to be "single" in the composer dept. hope that helps! response: Good post! Most projects don’t have a music supervisor. And music supervisors don’t really deal with the score, they deal with songs. It’s the director that decides who they want to collaborate with. The best contact to have is actually the editor. He is the closest collaborator, and of course might be cutting with temp music, which - in more case than one - gave a composer the opening to score the film. THE IMPACT OF SILENCE ON SOUND In considering the impact of sound (audio) on the visual (video) medium, consider the silent partner. 'Breaking Bad' the greatest 'show' (arguably), and its successor, of equal if not greater calibre ... (arguably), 'Better Call Saul' both have exquisitely utilized silence as a creative device, to great effect. Films that are first of mind, Michaelalengo Antonioni's 'Blow Up', McQueens' 'Bullitt', and 'The French Connection' are a few classics that save for atmosphere field recording, have no dialogue, and/or music, for inordinate amounts of time. The tension created, draws in an audience I had the pleasure of watching the Norwegian film 'Number 24' on Netflix (Canada) .... outside of the brilliant score by Kristoffer Lo, unless I missed it, there was but one contemporary song used ... Radioheads' 'Exit Music (For a Film)' Sung in English in a film that was almost entirely Norwegian / German spoken - which, in my mind, further served its distinction and impact on the film. Brilliant, perhaps they decided with their budget, let's throw it all down on this one 'banger' for this critical moment in the film .... whatever the story, it worked. Visually speaking, to me, silence, or to a lesser extent, removing some of the layers of audio inundating audiences will draw them into a visual narrative particularly in this era of 24/7 noise. Turn it off. Silence is akin to a black canvas, sound is a light that emerges from a black canvas. The use of silence, is a vital, underused dynamic tool that will greatly enhance your visual medium and its budget.
