We're thrilled to have supported industry leaders Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE) in the development of comprehensive LCA guidance for flexible packaging! 🍫 This guidance aligns methodologies for LCAs and ensures consistency and quality across the industry. It’s a valuable resource for LCA practitioners and reviewers, easing the process and reducing documentation requirements. To ensure sustainability plans are ambitious and science-based, we need industries to work toward common standards. This guidance helps players in the flexible packaging industry play by the same set of rules regarding impact assessments. “Quantis is proud to have led the technical development and drafting of this LCA guidance, working closely with industry leaders to ensure its applicability and impact.” – Patricia G. & Laura Peano, Quantis Read more about the guidance >> https://lnkd.in/evuvR6KU #SustainabilePackaging #LCA #Packaging

Quantis is engaged into transforming sectors at scale through consortiums bringing the whole industry together. Another example of that beyond #SPICE or #EcoBeautyScore, with Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE). Great achievement by the Quantis team, Laura Peano and Patricia Granados but also others in the background, in collaboration with the companies part of the consortium, to align the industry on applying consistent LCA methodologies. It is only through #sciencedriven #solutionsfocused work and #collaboration that we will progress towards aligning businesses with #PlanetaryBoundaries.

Call for abstract for #SETAC Vienna May 2025! What’s the added value of Life Cycle Assessment for chemical sustainability assessment under the EU JRC #SSbD framework? 👉 Do You have a strong opinion on this you want to share? 👉 Case studies to illustrate the value of #LCA in the SSbD context? 👉 A list of issues you faced while testing the SSbD Framework in your industry? This session is for you. Please submit your abstract here choosing : 5.02 - Safe and Sustainable Chemicals and Materials: The Role of Life Cycle Assessment in Chemicals Sustainability Assessment to Steer Innovation and Competitiveness https://lnkd.in/dPkqh-M4 I will co-chair this session with my colleagues: Carla Caldeira, Hanna Holmquist and Andrea Amadei. The ambition of pushing for chemicals and materials safe and sustainable in all life cycle stages is clashing with several methodological challenges to ensure the practical implementation of a complete and robust assessment: lack of toxicity data, lack of process data, the complexity of the modeling, time and cost, etc. Against this backdrop, this session calls for contributions focusing on the role of LCA to steer innovation, e.g. with new approaches for screening LCA, prospective LCA, scenario analysis, coupling LCA and machine learning/artificial intelligence to speed, and expanding the assessment or handling data gaps, coupling LCA and material flow analysis to enhance the system level assessment and to combine material to product scale. Moreover, it aims to explore the added value of LCA in assessing sustainability and circularity with special attention on the toxicity impact categories in LCA/PEF, considering the information obtained from risk assessment. LCA must provide information that is not already obtained in RA: RA addresses safety, while LCA addresses sustainability! ERM are proud to attend #SETACEurope2024 which is addressing the theme of “Science based solutions in a time of crisis: Integrating Science and policy for environmental challenges”. At the event, we will host a seminar (Daniele Ruccia, Peter Shonfield, Valentina Ricottone, Ph.D., Apostolos Koutsaftis, Ricardo Petersen, Francisca Ribeiro, Mariana Rato, Tim Barber) talking about sustainability in chemical design, and the need for this thinking to be inherent in the chemical design process. As part of the EU Green Deal, there is progress towards some of the targets outlined by the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability, and in particular the objective to minimise the use of the most toxic compounds in the market, but little progress on sustainability targets. This has been emphasized by the recent European Environment Agency dashboard, calling for more progress on circularity targets. Specifically talking about “Safe and Sustainable by Design – How to reconcile Safety and Sustainability Assessment in the Chemical Industry?” we wish to reiterate the importance of sustainable thinking in the EU chemical industry: - Whilst green chemistry is part of the solution, it must be supported by green engineering. - Highlight the impact of indirect effects in the supply chain and the need for this to be minimized. - Sustainability should be at the heart of any design or re-design of a chemical process. - A need for more action to promote the transition to the circular economy. Whilst ERM recognize that the challenge is enormous and that work is underway to start to address these issues, we wish to emphasise the scale of the challenge and can support industry to establish the philosophy of Safe and Sustainable by Design. If you wish to attend our seminar, please register at https://lnkd.in/d9ywXRHc We are looking forward to meeting you on Wednesday, 8th May 2024, from 12:55 - 14:25, at the Video Conference Room (Floor 3, FIBES 2) at SETAC. In addition to the seminar, at SETAC the ERM team will be happy to meet you at our booth 230. #chemicals #toxicology #sustainability #environment #safe #sustainable #SSbD
