4 years ago today Frank O'Connor shared an image of a derelict building in Cork City. He repeated this everyday for a full year. Then other people started to share photos of derelict buildings in their neighbourhood and the #DerelictIreland movement was born. This national movement has reframed dereliction as something that should be accepted as normal into seeing it as an unacceptable waste of precious resources. #DerelictIreland changed national policy, from new taxes to new grants. Its lead to stronger enforcement of existing laws by some councils. #DerelictIreland was a foundational election issue in dealing with Ireland's Housing Crisis and has gained phenomenal amount of international and national media attention. But most of all #DerelictIreland lead to a massive culture change, where people started to look up and the buildings around them and said this is no longer acceptable. Here's a video of Franks year long thread below. #VacantIreland #RestPlayWork #EveryOneShouldHaveAHome #ActivitstArt #ProtestArt #PeopleHaveThePower #ChangeIsPossible #ClimateAction #LiveableCities #GoodDesign

Did you know? Direct Rental Assistance (DRA) is an alternative approach to providing rental housing assistance. Instead of paying landlords directly, the subsidies go to households to pay their landlords. Abt’s housing experts, Jill Khadduri, Hannah Thomas, and Meryl Finkel, Ph.D. describe how this approach can bolster autonomy, and why rigorous testing of DRA could inform the future of housing assistance programs: https://lnkd.in/eHs3kuWA

Toll bridges remain a hot topic in Bay City. Bay City Bridge Partners acknowledges no one likes paying tolls, but General Manager Kevin Bischel argues that the tolls paid for bridge improvements. Better bridges are helping build the local economy. "If you take a look in and around Liberty and Independence bridges, you’ll see more than $500 million in new economic development over the past couple of years. I see more and more of that. Reliable infrastructure breeds development. I truly believe Bay City is well positioned for future growth." Read more at https://buff.ly/428hYqN
