EastSide Centre and the City of East Peoria are seeking a new leader for the indoor gym and fitness facility at the sports complex. The Fitness Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the facility's gymnasium, indoor track, recreational areas, workout areas, classrooms, and subordinate staff members. The Fitness Manager oversees all indoor programming, group exercise and Tae Kwon Do classes, personal and athletic training, fitness equipment, and areas of usage by members and guests alike. The Manager acts as a direct liaison between the EastSide Centre fitness staff and its’ fitness center members and guests. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the ability to develop marketing plans for the fitness center including the development of new programs, putting an emphasis on increasing membership sales, maintaining community branding, and creating a satisfying customer service experience for all members. A bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Physiology, Physical Education, or a related field is preferred. Can be substituted with extensive experience in a similar position and with a certification in the following: ACE, ACSM, Cooper, AFFA, NCSF, NSCA, or CSCS. The anticipated pay range is $50,000-$60,000 annually DOQE. A minimum of two to three years’ management experience is preferred. A percentage of membership sales and/or personal training may be negotiated in salary. Must possess excellent organizational, oral, and written skills. Successful completion of a background check and drug screen required. Residency within 25 miles is a requirement. This position will require working some evenings, weekends, and some holidays. This could lead to a more consistent client experience and a unified brand image. So, as a gym owner, you've got to consider what's important – do you value financial flexibility or control over client experience more? Remember, there's no 'one size fits all' answer here. I broke up with my regular gym...we just weren't working out. The newest country club doesn't necessarily involve golf clubs. High-end gyms are no longer just places to sweat it out. The most exclusive ones are now also salons, hotels and workspaces where people can mingle and socialize. They don't come cheap with membership fees ranging from several hundreds to thousands per month. They're cropping up faster than jack rabbits due in large part to a wobbly real estate market that's faltering under its own weight. It comes down to a basic principle: gyms need space. There's plenty of it right now in major cities in various metropolitan areas such as New York City. Soaring double-digit vacancy rates are presenting a unique opportunity for large gyms. Once muscle-bound property owners are now eager to attract customers to their struggling residential and office spaces, welcoming these gyms with open arms as potential anchor tenants. These luxury gyms make Planet Fitness look like a small moon. Triple the square footage of typical lower-end gyms, these new gyms are as much country club as sports and entertainment centers. In today's remote and hybrid work combined with a growing need for work-life balance, these gyms would seem to offer everything. From co-working spaces and child care services to special events and educational workshops, these luxury gyms would seem to be a savior for landlords and work-life escapists. How much does it cost to buy a membership and then never use it? Like the masses who sign up for gym memberships on January 2, people are willing and motivated...until they're not. People forking over thousands a month for a membership would seem to fall under that category. The other issue to keep in mind is that many gym companies are securing these large spaces by signing 25-year leases, which is as wacky as hula hooping all day long. In comparison, most commercial leases are five to 15 years, and office leases at 10 years. Here's my HONEST list of red, orange and green flags that I look for when hiring for our premium boutique gym 🚩 Green Flags - things that help me hire them 🟢 They understand they've got a lot to learn 🟢 They're positive 🟢 They're in the industry to help people 🟢 They want to be part of a team 🟢 They value constant improvement and learning 📈 🟢 They know about our gym, brand and concept and are excited to work with us Orange Flags - things that we need to dig deeper on 🟠 They've been in the fitness industry for a long time 🟠 They've owned their own gym or studio 🟠 Pay appears to be a primary focus for them 🟠 They've only worked in big-box gyms 🟠 They want a quick route to management or another position in the company Red flags - things that probably mean we won't be offering a position or moving to the next stage of the interview process 🚩 They're late for the interview (no apology and we might as well call it a day there and then!) 🚩 They know nothing about our company 🚩 They say they aren't a morning person 🚩 They speak ill of their last employer or work environment 🚩 They're excited about fitness in general and their training, but are less enthusiastic (or unenthusiastic) about helping other people hit their goals That's a quick list, but in reality there are probably another 10-20 little things that we all consciously and subconsciously look out for 👀 The longer you hire for, the more you know what to look out for. This past year I had the opportunity to complete the MSc in Sports Management program at University College Dublin. As part of my dissertation, "The Challenges in the Leisure and Fitness Industry in Ireland: A Manager’s Perspective”, I researched the key challenges faced by senior managers in multi-sport leisure and fitness facilities in Ireland. Summary of the key findings: Key Challenges: - Human Resources: Difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled staff post-COVID, coupled with the need for continuous staff development and training. - Financial Management: Rising operational costs, particularly energy expenses, and the challenge of securing consistent funding. - Quality Control: Ensuring health and safety standards while dealing with aging facilities and maintaining customer satisfaction. - Customer Service: High service demand and the growing use of technology, requiring a balance between efficiency and personal interaction. - Innovation: Barriers to innovation due to a lack of autonomy and/or resource constraints. Strategies for Success: - Developing clear career pathways within the industry and investing in staff training and consistent professional development to address HR challenges. - Implementing sustainable practices to manage financial pressures. - Planned preventative maintenance to keep on top of any arising issues particularly within aging facilities. - Strengthening community engagement to maintain customer loyalty and satisfaction. - Staying on top of industry trends in technology and wellness to foster innovation and growth. This research highlighted the importance of strategic management in adapting to the evolving landscape of the leisure and fitness industry in Ireland. I’m incredibly proud of the work and grateful to the industry professionals who shared their insights with me to open up on their experience within the industry. Part 1 of 3 Dear [Employer's Name], Subject: Forced Registration (Fitness Australia) I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the requirement for fitness professionals to register exclusively with Fitness Australia and to seek clarification on the benefits this mandate provides to your organisation. As you may be aware, registration with an industry association is only mandatory in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Even then, there are multiple associations to choose from. However, it has come to my attention that Fitness Australia is being favoured to the exclusion of other associations, which raises several important issues. Firstly, Fitness Australia's registration fee of $270 every two years is a significant financial burden, especially for low-paid professionals in our industry. This fee does not appear to provide any tangible benefits to registrants. In fact, in 2018, Fitness Australia reportedly used these funds to oppose an attempt by the Australian Workers Union (AWU) to increase penalty rates before the Fair Work Commission (FWC). This action was contrary to the interests of many fitness professionals who would have benefited from higher penalty rates. Fitness Australia justifies its mandatory registration by citing their continuing education system. However, this system is essentially a financial transaction between the provider and the association, with no apparent auditing or quality control. Other associations also offer continuing education systems and, as a professional, I am capable of continuing my education without relying on a point system. Additionally, the exclusive requirement for registration with Fitness Australia promotes anti-competitive behaviour by excluding other qualified professionals who are registered with different associations. This not only limits employment opportunities for those individuals but also restricts your organisation’s ability to benefit from a diverse pool of talent and expertise. Such practices undermine fair competition and could potentially violate principles of fair trading and industry best practices. Furthermore, I would like to bring to your attention Section 349 of the Fair Work Act 2009, which prohibits misrepresentations about workplace rights, including membership of industrial associations. By mandating registration with a specific association, there is a risk of contravening this section if it results in misleading or coercive practices that affect the rights of your employees.

𝐀 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐲𝐦 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐲𝐦. 𝐎𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬? Often, the fanciest gym equipment is less effective than a pure barbell. Because people designing the equipment weren't paid to find the simplest and the most optimal solution, on the opposite, education teaches us to come up with as sophisticated a solution as possible. Would you choose a trader who wears a suit, an expensive watch, has an extensive financial vocabulary, or one in pajamas, mumbling, and without any expensive accessories? If a trader is successful enough, why would he need to wear a watch and a suit to prove his status? Real-world skills often don't match the ones we perceive as necessary. There's a difference between being skilled at talking and actually doing what you are talking about. Appearance can simply be deceiving. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭? While take-home assignments, code samples, and references aren't used often in an interview process - those can help you select the best professional. The best test of skills or ideas is time, so you must ensure the candidate stands the test of time. That he's not only been a developer for ten years but also has something to show for it, like code, references, etc. - I'd be much more confident in choosing him. The same goes for candidates as well - references are an integral part of your resume, and open-source code can go a long way in proving your competence even before the interview.
