I don't know about other industries, but in construction consulting, firms employ recruitment specialists part of whose job is to informally find out adverse information about candidates. Discussions are also likely had informally between senior managers of the various firms. I believe that they also maintain recruitment databases, which log information gathered. Criminal practice can be called blacklisting, in which candidates for employment are discriminated against by these consulting organisations based on such 'information', without the individuals concerns having any chance to address it, without it being verified and often without the firm ever meeting or speaking to their victims. This wholly unethical and potentially criminal behaviour on behalf of these companies destroys the careers and lives of innocent individuals including those who have worked hard to obtain academic and professional qualifications. If you have any experience of this please share. This unethical practise must be exposed for what it is, and those responsible brought to account and to justice. These firms should be liable to their victims to the tune of millions, and ought to face punitive corporate sanction as well. Let's expose them for what they are, and remove the masks which they use to create the pretence of being ethical, caring and responsible.

Is finding qualified talent in civil construction like searching for a needle in a haystack? I was recently having a conversation with a colleague in the civil construction industry, and the same theme came up yet again – finding the right talent is a significant challenge. Post-pandemic, the industry has seen a shift. Companies are juggling fluctuating workloads, and while projects continue to roll in, there’s a serious gap when it comes to filling key roles with qualified professionals. We’re not just talking about any hire – we’re looking for people who can lead, execute, and manage large-scale projects in an ever-demanding landscape. The issue isn’t just about skill. It’s about finding someone who has the right mix of technical expertise and leadership. It’s about experience, the ability to manage teams, budgets, and deadlines under pressure. And let’s not forget industry-specific requirements like licensing and local experience – especially for senior roles like project managers, civil engineers, or land surveyors. The question I keep hearing from employers is: “Where do we find these people?” The good news is that, while challenging, it’s not impossible. A well-thought-out approach to recruitment that focuses on tapping into niche markets and leveraging relationships can go a long way. We have to be more proactive, creative, and strategic in how we engage with potential candidates. This is where staffing partners play a pivotal role—helping bridge the gap and find the right fit. If you’re also navigating this hiring dilemma, I’d love to hear your thoughts. How are you managing your recruitment efforts in this tight market? #ConstructionIndustry #TalentShortage #CivilEngineering #RecruitmentChallenges #LeadershipInConstruction #StaffingSolutions

Hey Andrew, have you noticed a trend in the construction industry of late, where recruiters cold call professionals regarding employment opportunities in a very peculiar manner? Why, yes, I’ve noticed that recruiters are now calling regarding senior level positions with vast practice scopes and specifying paltry compensation rates, then hanging up when a counter offer is made, or a question is asked. The folks barely identify themselves and are quite curt. This trend is both disquieting and unprofessional. These “opportunities” and the folks offering same are best avoided. If we want professionals, we have to be willing to compensate them fairly. Makes good sense to me. Unless the end state picture is uninformed people overseeing technically complex work. Good tip, Andrew. Thanks

Time is the enemy! In the construction industry today, skilled talent is a finite resource. This is far from new info – but unlike many other industries, there's a massive talent disparity and labor shortage ... and everyone needs skilled professionals. If you find a candidate who meets 85%~ of the technical qualifications and aligns with your organization's values and culture, it’s often a mistake to keep searching for the "perfect" candidate. Waiting just a few days to a week to "see what else is out there" can mean losing a great candidate to a faster-moving competitor. We see it far too often. The talent market in construction is moving quick as ever, even with some segments seeing a slowdown. It's wild out there! . . . #hiring #construction #recruiting #talentshortage #bybmym
