"I inherited a team and my number 2 isn’t quite at the level I need." Awkward, isn’t it? A common occurrence, but then again, what are the chances you inherit the exact team you'd have chosen? But if that’s the sole focus, are they potentially missing candidates who can also: - Identify inefficiencies and improve processes. - Provide insights that drive business growth. - Collaborate with other departments to achieve company goals. The best Financial Controllers I know are problem solvers AND strategic partners. For your next FC hire: - Focus on the value this person needs to add, not just the tasks they’ll do. - Benchmark your offering to ensure you’re attracting the talent you need. - Work with a recruiter who knows the difference between “qualified” and “exceptional.” Having the right FC makes or breaks your finance function. Not uncommon for agencies with up to $5M-$10M in revenue to not have a senior finance staff person. What often happens is they hire or elevate an operations role (COO) and that person also oversees finance. Or have someone on staff with a CFO title that splits their time between finance, operations, sales management, and the list goes on. Fractional roles provide a solution to segment out specific needs without having to hire a full time person until it makes sense.
