𝐎𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐱 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 Bulker prices are in the spotlight as German powerhouse Oldendorff Carriers tests the market.  Broker reports close to the cash-rich account note that two Japanese-built, 60,900 dwt scrubber-fitted ultramaxes, Alwine Oldendorff and August Oldendorff (built 2014, 2015), have been sold to undisclosed Asian buyers for $61m. This marks the first modern Japanese ultramaxes sold for over a month. The price is significantly higher than last done. The latest comparable sale in sale registers was sealed earlier this month when the 2015-built Swansea, a Yangzhou Dayang Shipbuilding built, slightly bigger 63,500 dwt bulker was sold for $25m while in a comparable deal from August last year, Grindrod Shipping sold two similar sized ships for $46.5m en bloc.

As part of ongoing adjustments to market conditions, Liberty Steel has decided to temporarily idle its wire mill in Peoria, Illinois, effective December 6. This decision affects 280 employees and highlights significant challenges within the US steel market, including competition from low-priced imports. The company had previously reduced production at its melt shop and rod mill due to these ongoing issues. The rod plant is now anticipated to resume operations on March 3, 2025, contingent upon securing certain financial agreements. This situation raises important questions about the resilience of domestic manufacturing and the strategic responses needed to navigate current economic pressures. A few things stand out in SMU’s latest check of the market. 👉 Lead times remain short/normal. And depending on the product, 75-90% of buyers surveyed said mills were willing to negotiate lower prices. 🙀 The drop in June scrap prices caught many by surprise. Nearly 60% had expected stable or higher prices. 😭 About one-third of respondents said they missed forecast last month. And 30% say demand is declining. Those are the highest readings we've seen in a while. 📉 Nearly 70% of service centers say they are releasing less steel. And 65% saying they are lowering prices. None say they are increasing them. ⁉ That’s a little dark. Is it the summer doldrums arriving earlier than usual? Or is it an indication that steel demand is cooling off? 🌞 On the bright side, buyer sentiment – despite everything above - improved notably. And most people we surveyed think prices will bottom later this month or next 🚢 Some of you have told me you’re seeing the highest levels of imports you’ve seen in years, especially when it comes to coated products. Import license data backs that up. But our survey suggests the days of high import volumes might be numbered. Nearly 90% of traders say they’re seeing a decrease in orders from North American buyers. And only 58% of service center respondents said they found current import pricing attractive, down from 85% in mid-March/early April. 🔮 My guess is July import volumes will come in a lot lower than what we’ve seen this spring. 📦 There’s a lot more in there to unpack.
