A phrase that a mentor used to say to me was "show me your friends and I'll show you your future" As I've moved through my career, relationships, and mentors, this wisdom has always stuck with me and guided my decisions as I grew my network and close circle. I want to collect people who I want to turn out like. People who inspire me, push me, and lead with humility and curiosity. It's one of the reasons I love working with startups and entrepreneurs so much. Entrepreneurs that aspire to make a difference and lead with a learning approach are some of my favorite people to collect. One of those special people in my life is Rachel L.. When I met Rachel over six years ago now, I knew she was someone I wanted to keep in my circle, someone who led with creativity, hope, and vision for a future that was different from the now. The way she chooses to value and honor those in her life is truly inspiring. So when Rachel asked me to join her as she embarked on a mission to connect Native Artists with Native art appreciators through Artisans of Nations, I didn't question it. Now, as we are in the midst of launching a brand new platform curated for sharing the stories of incredible Native artisans, their histories, and their cultures, I am beyond honored to play a small role in marketing these Native artists incredible work. **NEW REPORT** The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) serves on the Grantmakers in the Arts board and is introducing this report that is the culmination of more than 18 months of dialogue with Indigenous artists, elders, culture bearers, tribal liaisons, leaders of Native organizations, and individuals working inside the tribal relations offices of U.S. state and federal government agencies. All artists face challenges, but Indigenous artists face extra hurdles from the effects of fraud and cultural appropriation. Support to Native organizations and artists represents only about 0.4% of state arts agency grant funding, and many tribes are not aware that state arts agencies even exist. My answer to the second question in the slide below actually sparked a great convo earlier with my colleague Tamar Keenan about how outdated the term "career ladder" is. It makes careers seem so rigid and pre-determined. We don't have to always climb up to progress. It leaves unrealistic expectations and narrows what growth actually means. What should we be saying instead of "career ladder"? Perhaps, we should be calling it "career maps" instead, since there are many different career destinations to consider and pathways to reaching them that are equally as satisfying. This also includes taking the rocket ship up to space (senior management/c-level), which is certainly a destination, but not the only way to grow. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.
