Have you submitted your session proposal to the 2024 Basecamp Conference yet? If not, you should! Basecamp is a regional conference and workshop focused on sharing ideas and collaboratively creating a path forward for outdoor recreation management and gateway community planning in the American West. Basecamp will have two unique conference tracks and one shared workshop session during the week. You can submit a session for one, or both, depending upon your interests and availability: October 13-16 - Outdoor Recreation Track October 16-19 - Gateway Community Track Sessions and speakers across both tracks will be divided into our three main topic areas: 🏜️ COLLABORATION & PARTNERSHIPS: Managing outdoor recreation resources and planning for tourism-related challenges in gateway communities requires collaboration and partnership. Sessions submitted to this topic area should focus on building collaborative relationships or more formal partnerships to manage outdoor recreation resources and/or destinations. 🏜️ VISITOR MANAGEMENT: Improving or managing how visitors access outdoor recreation resources is essential to providing high quality experiences while also mitigating impacts on natural resources and local communities. Sessions submitted to this topic area should focus on efforts to expand, improve, or manage access to outdoor recreation opportunities or mitigate the impacts of visitation to natural resources and/or destinations. 🏜️ VISITOR EDUCATION & DESTINATION STEWARDSHIP: Efforts to meaningfully connect outdoor recreationists and tourists to the communities they are visiting while also educating them on safe and responsible participation can be critically important to delivering satisfying experiences, protecting recreation resources, and preserving the identities of gateway communities. Education efforts can also instill a desire and willingness from visitors to steward outdoor recreation resources and support local livelihoods. Deadline for submission is Friday, June 14, 2024. To transition from a Senior Lifeguard to a Recreation Supervisor, here are the key steps to take: 1. Leverage Your Experience • Highlight Leadership Skills: As a Senior Lifeguard, you already have experience supervising others and ensuring safety. Emphasize your leadership, communication, and team management skills. • Showcase Your Knowledge of Safety: Your expertise in water safety and emergency response is valuable in the recreation field, especially for programs involving physical activities. 2. Gain Knowledge in Recreation Program Management • Learn About Recreation Programming: Understand the principles of designing, organizing, and managing recreation programs for diverse groups, such as children, families, or adults. • Expand Your Skills: Take online courses or workshops on topics like event planning, customer service, budgeting, or facility management. • Understand Different Audiences: Study how to design inclusive programs that cater to different age groups and abilities. 3. Develop Your Creativity • As a Recreation Supervisor, you’ll need to develop new and engaging activities. Try brainstorming ideas for games, fitness classes, and group challenges that could appeal to guests. 4. Network and Seek Mentorship • Connect with Recreation Supervisors: Networking with others in the field can help you learn more about the role and how to make the transition. • Find a Mentor: A mentor with experience in recreation management can provide guidance, share valuable insights, and help you navigate the transition. 5. Update Your Resume • Tailor your resume to highlight relevant skills from your lifeguard experience, such as leadership, safety, customer service, and problem-solving. • Include any relevant certifications, such as CPR, first aid, or fitness training. 6. Apply for the Position • Look for opportunities that may allow you to start in a related role, such as Assistant Recreation Supervisor, where you can gradually take on more responsibility. By building on your existing skills and knowledge, gaining new insights into recreation management, and demonstrating leadership, you’ll be well-positioned to apply for and transition into a Recreation Supervisor role.

Congrats Arizona! WASHINGTON, D.C. – Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) celebrated today’s announcement by Arizona State Parks and Trails to establish a full-time program administrator for the Arizona Office of Outdoor Recreation. Arizona’s office—the 24th of its kind nationwide—will help bolster the Grand Canyon State’s efforts to utilize outdoor recreation as a tool for quality of life, public health, and economic growth.  Outdoor recreation generates $11.7 billion for Arizona’s economy, is 2.5 percent of its GDP, and creates 106,571 jobs, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.  Arizona’s announcement today highlighted that the new office, led by Neil Large, will “position Arizona’s outdoor offerings as a top choice for residents, visitors and industry partners while ensuring businesses, land managers and other stakeholders are empowered and all the beautiful state assets are conserved for future generations to enjoy.” The office will continue to receive support and coordination from the Arizona Office of Tourism to further its efforts, which are guided by five pillars: Environmental Conservation & Stewardship; Education & Workforce Development; Economic Development; Exercise, Health & Wellness; and Equity, Access & Inclusion. ⛔ No Re-entry Allowed? Let’s Talk About That. Recently, a major theme park brand made a seemingly small but significant change to their policies: no re-entry allowed. When I first saw this on Reddit, I thought, “That can’t be right.” So, I reached out to a friend who worked there, and the response was along the lines of, “Not my idea!” For those less familiar with theme parks, allowing guests to leave the park to grab something from their car—like diapers or sunscreen—is a basic guest service. It’s a no-brainer for ease and convenience. So why would a park make this change? While I wasn’t in the room when the decision was made, I have a strong feeling it came down to one thing: money 💲 Here’s the deal - some guests leave the park to eat their meals. In the past, coolers and snacks were welcome within the gates, but over time, policies became more restrictive. This no re-entry policy feels like the next logical (though unfortunate) step. Some parks I’ve worked at even had picnic tables outside the gates specifically for this purpose. Now, with this new rule, guests are essentially forced (yes, it feels weird to say that) to buy high-priced food inside the park. More revenue for the park but a big L for the experience. My take? It’s a short-sighted decision with potential long-term impacts on the brand. The whole point of a theme park is to create a place people want to go. But the more rules and nit-picky policies a park enforces, the more they risk alienating their guests. Sure, you might make a few extra bucks from those who stay, but what about the guests who leave early because it’s not worth the hassle? Or the families who decide not to return? What do you think?
