My association with Grateful Giving has given me new insight to the decrease in everyday donations to charitable organizations. Giving Tuesday was developed to bring focus at least one day a year, but the need is year round. So why not give every time you spend? SHOCKING!!! DID YOU KNOW that over 70% of gift in-kind donations sent to charities and non-profits are completely useless? Let that sink in for a second. This makes my blood boil!  (This is what charities are constantly telling us). Approximately, 27 years ago, I was volunteering at a shelter, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing—bags of donations were piling up, unsorted, filled with things the shelter couldn’t use. Charities are drowning in trying to fundraise for the essentials they desperately need, and yet, they’re stuck with donations they can’t help their clients with--don't need. I hate waste. It’s outrageous to think about the quality of what some people give—items I wouldn’t give to my worst enemy. If you’re clearing out your closet, ask yourself this " Would I still wear this under other circumstances?"   If the answer is no, then why should someone in need have to? I've seen firsthand how donations can hurt more than help—clothes in gang colors, mismatched items, and things so dirty /torn they were tossed out. We need to do better. This isn’t just about giving; it’s about dignity, equality, and truly supporting those in need. Today, charities are still buried under a mountain of issues—not enough volunteers to sort through it all, no space to store in-kind donations, and not enough of what they really need. By now, y'all probably realize that I'm passionate about donating blood and trying to get others to also do so. For my 40th birthday a few days ago, I didn't ask for monetary donations, but just discovered that I can create a virtual blood drive with the American Red Cross. So ... In lieu of asking people to donate money to a charity this year, I’m instead hosting a #SleevesUp #VirtualBloodDrive and asking friends and family to pledge to give blood in the next 90 days. Together, we’ll track our pledges, cheer each other on, and, most importantly, provide lifesaving gifts for people in need. Today is the launch of our #LCBAKindness Campaign, a movement dedicated to celebrating and spreading kindness in our communities. Whether you’re an LCBA member or not, we invite everyone to participate in this initiative to promote goodwill and positivity! GIVING TUESDAY Having worked in the Non-Profit/NGO world for part of my career, I can assure you every act of generosity, no matter how small, can have a huge impact. Your contributions can help change lives and build stronger communities. Just a reminder to check out the charities before you donate. Take a quick pause to research the organizations you're supporting and ensure they're transparent about how they use donations. Your donation deserves to go to a cause that truly matters and has a track record of making a real difference. Here are three reliable watchdog groups I found that can help you evaluate charities: Charity Navigator: Evaluates financial health, accountability & transparency using a star rating system (1-4 stars). GuideStar: Offers access to information on nonprofit organizations, including financials and impact reports. CharityWatch: Focuses primarily on financial efficiency, and uses a letter-grade system (A-F) to rate charities #GivingTuesday #NGO #NonProfit #MakeADifference
