【Promotion】 Road mobility is a double-edged sword: it’s essential for logistics within the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Hong Kong, yet it’s also the source of significant roadside emissions, contributing to 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. The cross-boundary transport not only affects roadside air quality but also poses a challenge to public health and climate change mitigation efforts. The panel discussion will focus on evaluating the integration of road transport within the urban mobility masterplan and exploring impactful strategies, technological advancements, and policy measures to mitigate emissions and enhance air quality in road transportation across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. We will also examine Shenzhen’s initiative to establish low-emission zones and decarbonize its logistic fleet which presents a unique opportunity for Hong Kong to accelerate its own fleet decarbonization and enhance air quality. We are honoured to have Prof Edward Chan, Co-Founder of the Hong Kong E-vehicles Business General Association, Dr Saraansh Dave, Director – eMobility at CLP Power Hong Kong, Ms Eva Deng, Overseas Business Operation Director at Digital Sustainable Transport (DST), and Mr Ralph Xu, Head, Green Transportation at APAS - Automotive Platforms and Application Systems R&D Centre as our speakers for ‘Creating Solutions for Low Emission Road Transport. Moderated by Mr C.Y Lawrence Iu, our Executive Director. I am proud to announce our full support for the initiatives set out in "The Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address." These efforts align with our purpose for improving quality of life through sustainable and innovative solutions. As our Head of Cost and Commercial Management for Hong Kong & Macau, William Fong, has emphasized, the key initiatives include the creation of land for new developments and streamlining of land development processes, adopting a multi-pronged approach to lower construction costs, aligning Hong Kong's building design standards with Guobiao, enhancing transport infrastructure in the Northern Metropolis, and continuing to promote waste reduction and recycling. We are very excited about these initiatives and are well-prepared to partner with industry peers in supporting the Hong Kong government to implement them. Together, we can contribute to creating a more sustainable and prosperous future for Hong Kong. In alignment with DP World the Decarbonizing of the Greater Bay: Hong Kong and Shenzhen Lead the Charge * Maritime heavyweights in Hong Kong and Shenzhen rally to revolutionize shipping with green fuels and electrification. * The push aligns with global decarbonization goals, positioning the region as a leader in green maritime innovation. In the beating heart of Asia’s maritime world, Hong Kong and Shenzhen are charting a bold new course. With backing from the Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping, Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, and the Yantian District Government, stakeholders are uniting to decarbonize the shipping industry. Their focus: alternative green fuels like methanol and the electrification of ports and short-sea routes. Hing Chao, a visionary in maritime decarbonization, heralds the initiative as a testament to China’s innovative capabilities. “Clean fuels and electrification are within reach, but action is urgent,” he declares. Hong Kong, with its thriving port infrastructure, is poised to serve as a hub for green energy solutions, supporting the IMO’s 2050 decarbonization goals. Competition is fierce. Ports like Singapore, Shanghai, and Ningbo-Zhoushan are leading in green fuel adoption. Yet, Hong Kong’s 1,100 maritime firms are determined to secure their place at the forefront of sustainability. Secretary of Transport Lam Sai-hung summed up the urgency: “We are in a hurry, but we are not late.” The decarbonization drive offers vast opportunities—not just for environmental progress, but for economic expansion in Hong Kong and Shenzhen’s maritime, financial, and port sectors. This is more than a regional ambition; it’s a global imperative.
