An interesting article, it certainly outlines a problem for small local charities. However, it would have been nice to see some balance. Many large charities operate more like regional franchises with their own local leadership teams, board of trustees etc. Age UK, Mind and Relate come to mind, but there are many others. I'm sure industry leaders like Dan Skipper, Lynn Perry MBE, Mark Russell 🇺🇦,Vicki Thornton and Jackie O'Sullivan, FRSA - to name but a few - could've provided a balanced view and signposted examples where local partnerships have been effective. That said, it is a problem. Having set up and ran a #nonforprofit that did run a government funded service, I have some experience here. Our solution was to partner with the contract holder, in order to deliver the Government Enterprise Allowance business support programme for unemployed on the Isle of Sheppey. It worked really well. I believe most large charities would welcome the opportunity to work with local charities to deliver services in an area. It's a shame that the article didn't highlight some of the examples where collaborative partnerships and regional boards help to overcome some of the issues raised.

We’ve been here before with Governments of Left and Right. Proceed with caution are the watchwords. And do nothing that will compromise our independence & voice. New Governments always like strident voice to evidence the failures of the last one. The proof of the pudding is whether they still welcome that voice when it’s levelled at them - as it must be, and should be, if we are to speak for those we exist for. Meantime how about proper funding for Local Govt which is being forced to abandon grants to local charities it respects due to lack of funding. How about NICs for charities delivering core services? How about an end to the two children policy? Actions matter. Words don’t.

What are your thoughts on Lisa Nandy’s plan to restore charities to the “centre of national life”? Let’s be real: without addressing funding, this is just lip service. Our sector is already stretched to breaking point—overworked, underfunded, and filling the gaps left by years of cuts. So, where’s the support package? Where’s the acknowledgment of the financial reality the sector faces every day? Words alone won’t revive our communities. Charities are ready to help rebuild, to be that safety net, to drive opportunity and resilience. But it’s time we got the tools to actually make that happen. We need action, not applause. https://lnkd.in/esCQPAdK
