Recently, the PAHO/WHO Information Systems and Digital Health Unit (IS), Department of Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health (EIH) launched a new document titled “Artificial Intelligence in Public Health; Readiness Assessment Toolkit”. This toolkit is designed to assist member states in effectively integrating AI into their public Health system. But the big question is: how many of these states are actually embracing AI to ensure that no one is left behind? How can public health professionals and governments establish a solid foundation for successful AI integration, ultimately enhancing public health outcomes and operational efficiency? Here’s how we can help integrate AI into public health: 1. Identify the public health areas where AI can be integrated, such as governance, infrastructure, workforce, data management, funding, public engagement, implementation, and evaluation. 2. Adapt the PAHO “Artificial Intelligence in Public Health: Readiness Assessment Toolkit” to suit your country's unique needs. 3. Administer the toolkit to evaluate and enhance capacity for integrating AI into the public health system, driving strategic planning and improving public health outcomes. 4. Document and share your findings widely. 5. Develop an implementation guideline or roadmap and initiate the process.
