❌ Lesson learned, my dear friends! As we're diving headfirst into tax season here in The Netherlands, I wanted to share a little anecdote with you all – a lesson I learned the hard way that's applicable not only to our financial affairs but also to the world of interpreting. Last summer, I made the bold move to start my own business in The Netherlands. Fast forward a few months, and it's time for the scary "aangifte inkomstenbelasting" – the Dutch income tax return. Now, for my Spanish connections, it's akin to the infamous "declaración de la renta." 🤓 Initially, I thought, "How hard could it be?" I mean, I only had a handful of invoices, right? Reality check: As I delved deeper into tax forms and regulations, I realised that I was in way over my head. Sure, I enjoy dabbling in finance, but this was a whole new game. Plus, everything was in Dutch, and trust me, relying on machine translation was like navigating a labyrinth blindfolded. After wrestling with the questionnaire for what felt like an eternity, I came to a realisation: It's always better to call in the experts. So, I decided to hire a professional accountant. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer. Knowing that my tax affairs were in capable hands brought me immense relief – no more worrying about potential mistakes. Now, you might be wondering, "What does this have to do with interpreting?" Well, just like with taxes, when it comes to communication – especially in multilingual settings – it's crucial to have a professional by your side. Whether you're organising a multinational conference, a business negotiation, or a cultural exchange workshop, relying on rusty language skills or unqualified people is a recipe for disaster. 💡So, here's my advice: Stop struggling with your Spanish and invest in a professional interpreter for your events. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later. *** Curious about how I can help you? Have a look at my interpreting services and drop me a message. Let's make sure your message resonates! 📧 info@paulainterpreter.com #ConferenceInterpreter #SimultaneousInterpreting #ConsecutiveInterpreting #RSI #networking #freelancer #translation #communication

Yesterday, I shared how I tried something new out with one of my clients, a lawyer who specialises in tax law. She wanted to expand her vocabulary on legal topics and increase her knowledge of law in English speaking countries. I thought to myself: what is a real source of legal news that is relevant and up-to-date? The answer… Newsletters! Today I am sharing some specifics of what we found in our search for relevant newsletters. In a KPMG newsletter on tax matters for business, my client found an article on the OECD’s release of Pillar Two Global Anti-Base Erosion (GloBE) Model Rules and she was able to extract some useful vocabulary from it: 🟢to release: I have just released the assessment of the people I work with. 🟢to operate: this company operates in the UK. 🟢to issue with/by: The OECD issued the relevant companies with the expected report. 🟢to work through: I've been working through this memo. 🟢queries raised: I've raised queries to my clients in order to better understand the tax environment 🟢to raise something with someone: I've raised this point with my boss 🟢To date: I'm not aware of this tax risk to date. Do you know this vocabulary or were there some new vocabulary from this list? ----------------------------------------------- Hello! I'm Ruth Whittle and I help legal professionals speak English fluently so they can show up with confidence in work and unlock exciting international career opportunities. 💡Reflections of a Lawyer Journey (1/10) 1️⃣ The world is big, so as a lawyer, you should try to make it small Where it started… The moment I realized, starting my (tax) career at Andersen, that the company symbol was once iconic doors (see picture), I understood that Tax Law does not stop at borders. From day one, there was a need to think beyond your jurisdiction. Be local but, at the same time, have an international mindset. It is essential to forge a link to the global legal community—whether through colleagues, clients, conferences, or studying abroad. Realizing this early in your career makes the journey easier. Finding that global mindset requires action. You need to demonstrate approachability and readiness for international work by embracing diverse perspectives and being open to collaboration. I still remember the awe of my team during client conference calls when I inserted translated Portuguese idioms/proverbs as a connecting point. “Who doesn’t have a dog, hunts with a cat.” Small gestures like these help connect and make the world feel smaller. Law is also only part of the equation. To truly excel, it is vital to broaden your knowledge in areas like economics, business strategy, and human behavior. Languages and cultural awareness are excellent tools for building deeper relationships across jurisdictions—and for making the world smaller. An international mindset isn’t just about crossing borders; it’s about building bridges and creating meaningful impacts for those we serve. “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln #CareerReflections #ProfessionalGrowth #korepartners

Larger companies with more than 250 employees are particularly active in this area (23 percent) compared to smaller companies (15 percent). Why is the prevalence so low? ➡️ Lack of resources in small companies ➡️ Legal hurdles: such as labor, social security and tax law.
