We often receive the question: "What paint color should I use with DronePoints?" Unfortunately, there's no straightforward answer due to the varied factors like weather, lighting, and surface conditions. To address this, we conducted our own brief test using popular marking paint colors used by land surveyors and drone mapping professionals around the world. In our test on faded asphalt, we found the following: Contrary to the label "high visibility," some paints, like fluorescent orange and caution blue, reflect too much light and compromise visual contrast, resulting in overexposure and a washed-out appearance in aerial imagery. In our testing conditions, light-absorbing and longer wavelength colors like caution red and black performed the best. Our recommendation is to choose a marking paint that contrasts with the ground surface color. For concrete or faded asphalt, darker colors like black or red generally perform best. However, on a freshly sealed asphalt with a dark surface, a lighter color such as orange, blue, or white might be needed to achieve the necessary contrast. It's essential to consider the specific conditions of your mapping environment for optimal results.

Exciting update from DronePoints! Our recent tests on a faded asphalt surface under sunny skies revealed stunning results with matte finish marking paints. The colors we tested: Black, fluorescent orange, caution blue, safety red. Results show that Black and Red emerged as the top performers, delivering unparalleled visibility! Our Recommendation: For optimal results, choose matte finish black and red paints when working under similar conditions. These colors truly stand out, providing clarity from 325 feet above ground level with a 20-megapixel camera (1.2-inch ground sample distance)! Remember, gloss finish paints can be a no-go! Stick to matte finish water-based marking paint for temporary targets. Avoid more permanent options like spray paint or striping paint unless absolutely necessary.
