🌍 FAIR-EASE Open Day on Open Science for Earth Systems 🌍 📅 October 10th, 2024 📍 Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Villa Comunale, Naples, Italy To mark the third annual meeting of the European INFRAEOSC FAIR-EASE project, the organizing committee is hosting an Open Day dedicated to Open Science for Earth Systems (Volcanoes, Soil, Water, and Biodiversity). Co-organized by the University of Naples Federico II and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, this event will take place at the main building of SZN. 📊 Objective: The morning session aims to raise awareness and foster cooperation between national initiatives and the broader European landscape. Discussions will focus on improving interactions, synergies, and training among policymakers, scientists, and the private sector. #Bachelors student Tuva Elingstam has been busy working with Luis Gonzalez Guerrero, Maria João Mendes & myself at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (#UMF) over the past few weeks investigating photoacclimation in #Arctic seaweed (#Fucus) for her final year thesis. It is expected that the coastal underwater light environment will change a lot in the coming decades - becoming darker (#CoastalDarkening) and changing colour (#brownification). As biodiversity hotspots, understanding how habitat-forming seaweeds such as these will respond to future light environments is crucial for predicting ecosystem change. Eco tiles have been designed and researched in the past decade in relation to massively increasing local marine biodiversity in areas of artificial coastlines 🦀 These tiles are places on otherwise flat sea walls, such as along erosion defences and harbours, which enhance and promote the recruitment of species by x2 🪱! The small crevices act as micro habitat for fauna, allowing for a biodiverse ecosystem to grow on the tiles by providing shelter and cooler temperatures 🌊 Some studies have even found an increase of animals by 450% on an otherwise flat surface, including invertebrates, algae, and juvenile fish 🐟 The increased abundance of invertebrates including molluscs such as Mussels have also been found to improve water quality in the local area 🦪 I first heard about these eco tiles through research at my university, and since then I like having a look around harbours to see if there have been eco tiles implemented. It’s great to see how small changes in just the surface of sea defence infrastructure can have large positive impact to the marine life around these spaces! #marinebiology #marinescience

🌱🌍 New research alert! 🌍🌱    We’re excited to share our latest paper exploring the “Mediterranean seed germination syndrome” across the unique biodiversity of the Mediterranean Basin. Using experimental data from 459 species and over 11,000 records, we tested how germination strategies are shaped by evolutionary pressures and local habitat conditions.    Our key findings:  - Seeds from lowland zonal habitats align with the classic Mediterranean germination syndrome (preferring cool, constant temperatures and low light).  - Habitat specialists (mountains, coasts, wetlands) deviate significantly, showing opposite germination cues - highlighting the influence of local adaptations.  - Seed mass and phylogeny further shape germination responses, demonstrating the complex interplay of evolutionary and ecological factors.  This study emphasizes the need to look beyond broad climatic patterns and consider local habitat adaptations in understanding plant strategies in this biodiversity hotspot. 📖 Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/dh3QdsBh The study was lead by Diana María Cruz Tejada   This research is part of the SeedArc consortium, a global archive of seed germination data: https://lnkd.in/d6cjcPTs. 🌊🔬 Building a Library of Life: Smithsonian Collections Revolutionize Ocean eDNA Research 🌍🧬 The National Museum of Natural History’s (NMNH) Ocean DNA program is pioneering eDNA research to monitor and protect Earth's environments. By leveraging the Smithsonian’s vast collections, researchers are creating a comprehensive genetic reference library for marine life, transforming how we understand and preserve biodiversity. Chris Meyer and his team have already sequenced over a third of the museum’s U.S. marine fish collection. This initiative supports long-term monitoring programs, making biodiversity data accessible to researchers and communities worldwide. The recently released “National Aquatic Environmental DNA Strategy” provides a unified roadmap for multiple agencies to share data efficiently, ensuring collaborative and effective eDNA analyses. Today, ahead of World Ocean Day, NMNH hosts the final meeting of the National Workshop on Marine eDNA with Johns Hopkins University. I’m happy to share that I’ve started my Doctor of Science at ETH Zürich, with the Environmental Physics group, Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution group, and The Sunagawa Lab! Within the BIOcean5D project, I'm unravelling patterns and drivers of marine diversity along coastal to open ocean gradients. 🌊🔍 Marine ecosystems, characterized by their vast biodiversity and complex biogeochemical processes, remain only partially understood despite their significance to global ecology. Through the use of Species Distribution Modelling (SDM), alongside a mix of traditional observations, and methods such as environmental DNA (eDNA) and metabarcoding, we aim to construct a comprehensive spatial framework of marine communities' distribution. Our goal? To bridge and refine existing knowledge gaps in global marine models, offering new insights into the distribution and diversity of plankton and fish. This endeavor is not just about mapping; it's about understanding how changes at different scales shape life beneath the waves. Terrestrial ecosystems are the thin layer of naturally evolved life at the Earth's surface whose interdependent biodiversity provide ecological services that power local habitats and the biosphere. Sadly, centuries of human overuse have drastically reduced natural ecosystem diversity and resilience, putting landscapes, bioregions, and the biosphere at risk of collapse. A groundbreaking study, "Redefining Extinction Impact," highlights the vulnerability of these ecosystems and reinforces the ideas presented in my ground-breaking scientific paper from nearly a decade ago. The new research emphasizes that terrestrial ecosystems are slow to recover.
