Another totally inspiring, challenging, thought-provoking and energising day, spent with the incredible people leading the de-carbonisation charge in our now 70+ Hospitality & Brewing members. Some key takeaways for me:
💥 We’re trying to de-carbonise an industry. It’s hard. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀. Days when you make progress and days when you don’t. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗸.
💥 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼; you won’t always get it right but you’re trying. And you’ll get better each time.
💥 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 when things don’t go as you thought they would. It may have gone differently, but you’ve gained experience, and insight,
💥 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟯 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲. And terrifying. And paralysingly difficult. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘁. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.
💥 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁; commercial, mental, time, focus, energy. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
💥 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. This isn’t for Sustainability to solve. It needs Food Development teams, Procurement, Finance, Suppliers, etc., all pulling together. Rome wasn't built in a day and it wasn't built by one person.
However, the biggest take-away for me wasn’t a new one. But it was an important reminder: 𝗜𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼? 𝗜𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻? Some days, it’s easy to believe you can’t do it and that it’s someone else’s problem to solve. It isn’t.
Most of all, today was about hope. Hope that we can, and will, de-carbonise the industry. Hope that we can make a real and lasting difference, beyond our career horizons. And hope that the next generation will know that we really, really tried.
I’m so lucky to be a part of this. It’s what makes Hospitality, and the Zero Carbon Forum, so special. And so important.
We’ve got this!
Thank you to Carolyn Ball 🌍🍴💚, Becky Haywood and Jonathan Lloyd for the insight and energy. And to Amy de Marsac and Mitchells & Butlers PLC for hosting us.
