Do modern-day adaptive reuse strategies work on buildings constructed in the late 1800s? This Friday, February 23, SGH’s Keith Nelson and Eric Ober will highlight different eras of building construction and the likely implications of adaptive reuse for structures of varying ages. They will identify common code triggers and upgrade requirements, and offer insights into the building enclosure and structural aspects of adaptive reuse projects and how they impact building performance and maintenance. https://lnkd.in/ggzg-3Y5

Canada’s 2030 emissions reduction roadmap, entitled “A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy,” was released in December 2020. The plan notes the Government of Canada will: “ensure new federal buildings are net-zero and that all major building retrofits will be low-carbon, reducing embodied carbon in construction projects by 30% starting in 2025, and ensuring 75% of domestic office floor space (new leases and lease renewals) will be in net-zero carbon climate resilient buildings starting in 2030. 🌲 If you're curious about the importance of embodied carbon, check out this informative webinar: "𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀," Special thanks to Marcos Alejandro B. for highlighting this valuable resource! #EmbodiedCarbon #NetZero #Sustainability #ClimateAction

Transforming our built environment requires a new approach to designing and constructing buildings. We urge the next government to establish whole life carbon targets for buildings, focus on retrofitting our existing housing stock through a National Retrofit Strategy, and require Post Occupancy Evaluation for publicly funded projects. Collaboration between architects and the rest of the built environment sector is vital to share knowledge and achieve our objectives. ➡️ Read our priorities for the next government in our manifesto: https://ow.ly/5XSP50SjTkU
