The Gallipoli Campaign Tour with Patrick Mercer, OBE 19-26 September 2025 The Gallipoli campaign was an audacious but unsuccessful offensive against the Ottoman Empire. The alliance system had split Europe into factions of combatants and neutrals. However, at the war’s onset, the Ottomans were a wildcard, unaligned with either side. The empire was strategically positioned between the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Ottoman leadership actively sought a military alliance to enhance their power, favoring Britain as an ally. Constantinople made three attempts to secure an alliance with London in 1908, 1911, and 1913, but all were unsuccessful. For Britain, the potential strategic benefits of an alliance with the Ottomans did not outweigh the risks associated with supporting the weakening empire. Moreover, an alliance with Constantinople would have complicated Britain’s recent alliance with Russia, the Ottoman’s longstanding adversary. Germany, France, and England have always been in unison regarding Afro Eurasian problems. They were united in efforts to suppress the rich and inclusive heritage of the Andalusian Moors. Germany supported violence against the Andalusians. When we analyse the history we are able to see this clearly. When a strong resistance movement broke out in 1525 in the Kingdom of Aragon, Spain, that the forces of the king were only able to put down with substantial help from German forces. King Philip II (1556-98) of Spain concluded a treaty – the treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis – with Spain’s two principal rivals, France and England, on 3 April 1559. This enabled him, apart from other things, to focus on confronting Ottoman presence in the western Mediterranean and Ottoman support for the Moriscos. Ottoman military was more sophisticated and effective then. This strategy repeats by these countries in their current actions in Palestine. It is categorically evident. The only notable additional difference is the indiscriminate and unconditional support from the USA for Israel in this campaign inhumanely against the unarmed Palestinian civilians. It's crucial to draw lessons from historical facts and adjust our actions accordingly.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Tours and the internal struggles within the Umayyad Caliphate, the dynamics of power in Western Europe underwent significant shifts. Following the decisive confrontation, Charles, now recognized as a powerful leader, continued to consolidate his influence over the Frankish territories. His military campaigns, experience, and strategic alliances played crucial roles in solidifying his authority. While facing challenges, including rebellions and regions like Aquitaine striving for independence, Charles skillfully navigated the complexities of governance. Simultaneously, the Umayyad Caliphate dealt with internal divisions that weakened its ability to extend its influence further into Western Europe. The political and military control established by Muawiya faced internal strife, contributing to the overall decline of Umayyad power in the region. As the chapter closes, the Battle of Tours stands as a turning point in the historical narrative. While not the sole factor, it marked the beginning of a shift in the balance of power. Charles' leadership and the internal challenges within the Umayyad Caliphate collectively shaped the course of events in Western Europe. The unintended role played by regions like Aquitaine further emphasized the intricate interplay of politics and geography during this period. Ultimately, the legacy of the Battle of Tours was as a defining moment where the trajectories of Western Europe and the Umayyad Caliphate took divergent paths. Charles played a crucial role in shaping the future of the Frankish territories. Concurrently, the internal discord within the Umayyad Caliphate contributed to its gradual decline in Western European affairs. CELEBRATE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF DIEN BIEN PHU VICTORY (07/05/1954 – 07/05/2024) Dien Bien Phu Victory – a golden milestone in Vietnam’s long history Throughout Vietnam’s history of national construction and defense, the great Dien Ben Phu victory of May 7, 1954 marked a brilliant climax, a glorious miracle of the Ho Chi Minh era. This great victory was a decisive blow and a historical turning point that completely changed the endless war situation. The victory directly led to the signing of the Geneva Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina. This one victory created conditions and will power for the Vietnamese people to win the war of resistance against the US, liberate the South, and finally reunify the country. After 70 years, the Dien Bien Phu battlefield, now Dien Bien Province, has become a land of peace, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and its former adversary France. Source: vovworld.vn

📅 May 28 📖 On this day in #history : 585 BC – A solar eclipse occurs, as predicted by the Greek philosopher and scientist Thales, while Alyattes is battling Cyaxares in the Battle of the Eclipse, leading to a truce. This is one of the cardinal dates from which other dates can be calculated. It is also the earliest event of which the precise date is known. 621 – Battle of Hulao: Li Shimin, the son of the Chinese emperor Gaozu, defeats the numerically superior forces of Dou Jiande near the Hulao Pass (Henan). This victory decides the outcome of the civil war that followed the Sui dynasty's collapse in favour of the Tang dynasty. 1588 – The Spanish Armada, with 130 ships and 30,000 men, sets sail from Lisbon, Portugal, heading for the English Channel. (It will take until May 30 for all ships to leave port.) 1934 – Near Callander, Ontario, Canada, the Dionne quintuplets are born to Oliva and Elzire Dionne; they will be the first quintuplets to survive infancy. 1940 – World War II: Norwegian, French, Polish and British forces recapture Narvik in Norway. This is the first Allied infantry victory of the War. *Events selected are not necessarily positive/happy/to-be-celebrated, but items I thought were historically interesting and/or significant to their time and I'm trying to select items from a broad range of history and not clumped too close together.

June Officially Recognized as Portuguese Heritage Month on the National Day Calendar Mr. President Biden and PALCUS President Soares, My warm congratulations to PALCUS and its leadership on this wonderful milestone! 1.4 million Luso-Americans are indebted and applaud your efforts. Mr. President, on this the year we celebrate and commemorate other historic milestones: * 75 years of NATO's founding, of which Portugal was one ot he 12 original signatories; * 881 years of the founding the Lusitanian nation - the first or one of the first to recognize the 13 colonies as the United States of America; and * the Portuguese Diaspora worldwide commemorates our National Day - Portugal Day, Day of Camões, and of the Portuguese Communities - June 10, 2024 - there is no reason why the White House - or at least - the US Department of State - can't fly the Portuguese national flag next to the Stars and Stripes at the White House or at Foggy Bottom to honor the contributions of Portuguese and Luso-Americans to this Atlantic Alliance. What an exceptionally high recognition and honor this would be for us Luso-Americans. God Bless America and Viva Portugal! #TheWhiteHouse #USCongress #StateDepartment #Presidencia #PrimeMininsterMontenegro #SecBliken #FMGangel https://lnkd.in/de-A2MWT

#Martian On this sol in 160 (1910 March 06): In Auf zwei Planeten by Kurd Lasswitz (1897), the United Martian States defeated the United Kingdom at the Battle of Portsmouth, employing half a dozen airships with only 144 men to destroy three hundred warships within three hours. “England was deleted from the world. But the world went on. New spaceships arrived with new airboats. These did not go off to reinforce the blockade, but instead sought out the English warships in the colonies and threatened them with annihilation unless the commanders were in the service of the colonies. The latter suddenly found themselves dependent on themselves. India, Canada, the Australian colonies and the Cape Country declared themselves independent and set up independent governments. Ireland did the same. The Martian states recognized them as sovereign and neutral states, and so tremendous was the impression the annihilation of the English navy had made all over the world that no state objected to these changes. No hand was moved for England. Rather, the other nations hastened to secure the former trading areas of Great Britain for themselves. From the smaller colonies, every power attracted what it rounded off or thought necessary to better connect their possessions. For the time being, the booty was so rich that the areas that might have given rise to disputes among the divisors were not yet explored. The major European powers were quietly negotiating a division of English holdings in the Mediterranean and the dissolution of Turkey. “There began a formal competition between the governments to win the favor of the Martian ruler, who gave away lands and seas from the rich English possessions. Under the name of the Polar Empire of Nume, the Martian states were not only recognized as a factor in the Council of Great Powers, they actually occupied the leading position.” https://lnkd.in/gwreQy7N
