It was great connecting with Viraj Bahl at the Inc42 Media D2C Summit last week. When Viraj recounted his journey, he offered a refreshingly honest perspective. He addressed the often overhyped narrative of selling his house to start his business, strongly advising founders against taking such drastic steps. He acknowledged that, in hindsight, it was a decision driven by youthful enthusiasm and naivety, and it's not something he would repeat today.
He then discussed an unexpected advantage they encountered in the early days—an inventory shortage. By not overstocking retail outlets, their products sold out quickly, which, in turn, built strong retailer confidence. What began as a happy accident evolved into a strategic approach: maintaining lower inventory levels to drive sales.
Viraj also spoke about how his failed experience as a restaurateur revealed a gap in the Indian market for sauces beyond ketchup and mayo. This insight inspired him to create Veeba, with the goal of introducing global sauces with an Indian twist. He emphasized the importance of never underestimating any competitor, whether a well-established incumbent or a new entrant and stressed the value of continuously observing the market to learn and stay ahead.
Viraj’s journey highlights the value of learning from experience, adapting strategies, and maintaining a keen awareness of market dynamics to drive business success.
